After a successful 2023 test at 160 stores in Kentucky, Krispy Kreme and McDonald's announced a nationwide partnership. Later this year, three of Krispy Kreme's signature donuts will become available at select MCD locations. The nationwide rollout should be completed by 2026. Last year, while selling some of our Lehi Bakery products to wholesale accounts and looking into selling Magleby’s Chocolate Cake via grocery stores, I asked myself the question: Do you want to wholesale your products and be available everywhere, or do you want to stay in retail and sell your products exclusively? In every angle I considered, I came to the same conclusion for us: Retail and Exclusive. ✅ Product Quality: Our customers get the best product when it is the freshest. With the introduction of delivery schedules, we would be forced to deliver an aged product to the end consumer. Additionally, we would be putting our product and its presentation in the hands of a wholesaler. The delivery of an aged or mishandled product reflects poorly on us, not on the wholesale customer. The customer will likely forgive the wholesaler, but won't forget their poor taste in their mouth or how poorly it looked. 👨🍳 Customer Experience: We pride ourselves on 'hometown hospitality'. Customers getting our products second-hand isn't in alignment with our brand. We want the experience to be warm, hospitable, and engaging... every time. 💰 Financial Margins: At least in my experience, our wholesale clients want/need to make at least a 50-67% gross profit. As a result, they push for lower prices from us. To say that forces us to barely squeeze out a profit in today's labor and food cost environment is an understatement. 🚛 Logistics Simplicity: We simply aren't built for a distribution model. It would require a big investment in fixed assets and people. The costs would definitely outweigh any benefits until more scale was achieved. Executives at Krispy Kreme and MCD are a lot smarter than me and have way more information and data than I do. But this is my perspective: 🍩 For Krispy Kreme, there are probably a ton of efficiencies to be gained, sales will rocket higher, and fans across the country will rejoice. Hopefully some those efficiencies can help lift their 2.7% operating cash flow margin. 🍔 As for McDonald's, it should (at least temporarily) boost sales and give customers more reasons to come back through the drive-thru more often. With the exception of one small, long-standing wholesale customer two blocks away, we cut ties with all other wholesalers. Adding wholesale customers could be a big boost to revenues, but it would be a killer for our brand, experience, margins, and operational sanity. Costco Wholesale has been on a roll, hitting over 600 locations in the U.S. 🇺🇸 But did you know Rhode Island, West Virginia, and Wyoming are still waiting to join the Costco club? Tough luck. (Maine just got lucky with a new spot near Portland last November - hello, $4.99 chicken and $1.50 hot dogs! 🌭) Rhode Island might be next with local areas showing interest, but nothing's inked yet. Why are these three states missing stores? It's all about the numbers: - population - income - and more... Here’s why this matters to us in the transportation & logistics sector: Understanding Costco's strategy gives us insights into where and how to expand our own networks. Their data-driven approach to choosing locations could help us predict demand and optimize our routes. Costco’s moves might show us where the next big logistics demands could pop up. Also, the company's challenge with less populated areas? It's a clear signal of the hurdles we might face in similar regions. #Logistics #SupplyChainManagement #Business #Expansion #Costco https://lnkd.in/eiqamxPS

After the sudden closure of Foxtrot, it's clear that getting shelving space in one big retailer is not a silver bullet. It highlights the importance of a multi-channel footprint and diverse stockists to help avoid single-channel failure. Thoughts are with the brands affected and left with unpaid invoices and unsold inventory #foxtrot #CPG #Wholesale
