The last few months have been transformative. While I've been away from LinkedIn, I've been developing groundbreaking sales and marketing material for HyperSpeed Performance Technologies. Coaches and managers often struggle to balance data-driven insights with hands-on experience. This gap can lead to missed opportunities and suboptimal performance. One of the things that frustrates my football-supporting friends is the almost total focus by clubs on the engagement of fans who don’t actually attend matches and the apparent lack of interest in those who do. While that’s no surprise to me, it does - yet again - highlight how poorly football clubs (& federations) are designed when it comes to making attending fans feel valued. There’ll always be a Commercial Director & a Chief Operating Officer. There’ll always are often Marketing Directors and sometimes Communications Directors. But you’ll rarely see a Director of Fan Engagement or Fan Services or Fan Experience. (More than one occupant of a Head of Supporter Services / Experience has commented on that to me). This gives the impression that fans are never more than the second most important thing to a football organisation. That is one of the biggest differences between non-sports businesses and football. Every customer-facing business puts the customer at the heart of the business & designs its organisational activities to ensure customers are emotionally-invested & valued. And that underlines why so many loyal attending football fans feel second best. That’s just the way the industry is designed.
