At one nonprofit I worked with, we had a ton of donors. The catch? Almost all of them were event attendees who had never been asked to give outside of those events. We were hosting great parties and fun auctions, but the truth is, we were stuck on the event treadmill—constantly running, stressed about ticket sales, sponsorships, and barely making it to the finish line. Sound familiar? I've been hearing a lot from nonprofits who are tired of being so heavily event-driven and want to focus on long-term relationships instead. And let me tell you, shifting your focus pays off. While I’m not anti-events (I love a good gala as much as anyone!), the real magic happens when you transition event donors into major gift donors and long-term supporters. Here’s the thing: events can be a great entry point for donors, but they’re just that—an entry point. If you only ever reach out to your supporters when there’s a ticket or auction item involved, you’re missing out on building deeper connections, and you're leaving revenue on the table. So how do you make that shift? Start by getting to know your event attendees beyond the night of the event. What are their interests? Why did they come to your event in the first place? From there, build a follow-up strategy that focuses on storytelling, meaningful engagement, and specific asks outside of the event circuit. You’d be amazed at how many of those attendees are ready to deepen their involvement once they feel personally connected to your mission. Not only will this save you time and stress, but it will also yield more revenue—without the constant pressure of planning the next big thing. Plus, it strengthens relationships with donors who are in it for the long haul, rather than just for the night of the party.
