At ON&T, we pride ourselves on keeping a pulse on the emerging opportunities for ocean tech and cross-sector collaboration to transform the #oceanindustry. In an exclusive op-ed published in January’s ON&T Magazine, Dr. William Burnett, Director of the National Data Buoy Center, expressed a growing need for a “cooperative systems of systems” to bridge data gaps and advance our collective capacity for ocean observing. Recently, Dr. Burnett revisited the topic in a recently released Saildrone blog, commenting, “We don’t need to build a 1,000-moored buoy network. That’s not achievable. What we need is a conglomerate of moored and uncrewed systems working together to resolve ocean observation gaps to protect our communities and grow our economy.” As ON&T continues to profile industry developments and trends closely, it’s exciting to help amplify the ongoing conversation about how we can leverage rapidly-advancing technologies—such as uncrewed vehicles—and strengthen cross-sector collaborations to propose scalable solutions to previously insurmountable challenges.
