"Last night, 140,000 children were homeless, and 1.1 million youngsters tried to go to sleep without a bed of their own; it is estimated that 2.6 million children are missing out on meals." A sobering set of facts. I'd suggest that unless your social value aspirations, as a business, are tackling one or more of the many causes of poverty you are missing an opportunity to be the difference society needs. #Leadership #SocialValue #CompassionateEconomy

As we look ahead, the task facing the new Government looms large. The sad fact is that approximately 4.3 million children are growing up in poverty in the UK today. Across the nation, children attend school on empty stomachs or return to homes lacking heating or even a proper bed. An additional 1.4 million children experience mental health conditions, often without adequate support from an overstretched system. Our children deserve better, and we are calling on the Prime Minister and his Government to take bold action now to safeguard their futures. At the NSPCC, we remain steadfast in our commitment to ensure that political leaders prioritise the protection of babies, children, and young people in their future plans, to ensure every childhood is one of safety, happiness, health and opportunity. Through our recent joint campaign with other children’s charities, Children at the Table, we have been calling for the UK Government to: 🤝 Work together to improve the lives of babies, children and young people 🧒 Put children’s needs and voices at the heart of decision making 💷 Spend more of the nation’s wealth on babies, children and young people #nspcc #childline #poverty #politics #labour #newgovernment #politicsuk #keirstarmer #childrenatthetable #charity #coalition #children #babies #families #youngpeople #policy #hunger #participation #youthvoice #legislation #mentalhealth #health #wellbeing Action for Children Barnardo's National Children's Bureau The Children's Society #everychildhood

Homelessness is not just a statistic, it’s a reality for thousands of young people. Across Australia, there are at least 40,000 young people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and more than 400,000 living in poverty. Foyer Invest is calling on the Federal Government to invest in an additional 10 Youth Foyers across Australia - which would unlock housing, education and employment for over 3000 young people across Australia in a decade. Youth foyers break the cycle of disadvantage by giving young people a safe place to live with support and mentoring to help them achieve long-term stability and independence. The Youth Foyer network is working towards a collective goal of 50 Youth Foyers by 2030. 50 Foyers by 2030 would unlock thriving futures for 20,000 young people over the next decade, generating $2.9 billion in government savings in the same period. We have what it takes to unlock thriving futures for more young people experiencing or at risk of homelessness, and we need new investment mechanisms to take evidence-based solutions like Youth Foyers to scale. Read our budget submission here and please show your support by sharing with your network: https://lnkd.in/ghC9E6Jw #EndYouthHomelessness #10NewFoyers #50FoyersBy2030 #FoyerFoundation #FoyerNetwork #BuildMoreFoyers Liz Cameron-Smith

From our Co-Founder, William Galli Poverty was not created by God. It is we who have caused it, you and I through our egotism. - Mother Teresa Since Mother's Day was yesterday, it's only appropriate that we hear from one of the world's greatest mothers. Even though she didn't have any children of her own, she was the world's finest mother to all she met, and cared for. "Egotism" is defined as the practice of talking and thinking about oneself excessively because of an undue sense of self importance. Pretty much sums up what's going on collectively in our country today, no? Ladies and gentlemen. there're 37.9 million poverty stricken and homeless Americans living in our country today, 11 million are helpless, and vulnerable children, and 1.5 million are our nation's heroes, our beloved vets...and things are not getting better but worse! The first question that must be asked is. DO WE CARE!? And the second. Is, what we are doing to end poverty and homelessness in America working, and sustainable? Put down your foolish pride, ego, and sense of self importance and admit it, we as a nation are failing our nations most vulnerable citizens! At this very moment, we have the expertise, resources, and billions to end poverty and homelessness in America. But because of our nationwide, collective sense of self worth, importance, and priorities. We have chosen to put a band aid on a national crisis that's on life support! What will we say to our children, and the generations of Americans that follow when they ask. Why, did we do nothing when we had the expertise, resources, and billions to do something about it? Sign, and share our Petition From America at https://chng.it/9Rv7m52fmf.. so we can collectively as a nation, petition our United States Congress, and nation's leaders that We The People demand permanent change in the landscape of our nation's most vulnerable citizens, and an end to poverty and homelessness once and for all. #choosechange #choosecharities

📖 Term of the Day: Relational Poverty Relational poverty is more than just a lack of financial resources; it’s the absence of meaningful social connections that can be crucial to a person’s well-being and stability. When individuals lose touch with family, friends, or their community, whether due to circumstances like a lost contact number, lack of phone ownership, isolation, or even the deliberate severing of ties, they become more vulnerable. Without strong relationships to rely on, people may find themselves at higher risk of falling into homelessness. In many cases, relational poverty can be just as damaging as economic poverty, as it deprives individuals of emotional support systems and access to critical information or opportunities that can prevent homelessness. Studies show that people experiencing relational poverty are often more susceptible to housing insecurity and face greater challenges in rebuilding their lives. At HomeAid, we believe in addressing homelessness from every angle, including social isolation. We strive to rebuild not just homes but also relationships that can restore hope and security to those most at risk. 🛠️ Let’s work together to tackle the root causes of homelessness, including relational poverty. 💚 Learn how you can make a difference today by volunteering, donating, or spreading awareness. 🔗 Learn more and get involved at: https://ham.homeaid.org/ #RelationalPoverty #HomelessnessAwarenessMonth #HAM2024 #EndHomelessness #BuildHope #SupportCommunities #TogetherWeCan

A Saturday morning well spent… I don’t usually work weekends or do hands-on advice and support, but this morning I attended a coffee morning on behalf of our local MP with Citizens Advice Carlisle & Eden to discuss Benefit and the Household Support Fund, which I’ve been responsible for distributing this time around. While there, I had the privilege of chatting 1-1 with some of the people in attendance, and it was a humbling reminder of the immense need in our communities. Never underestimate the challenges people face, what they put up with, what they don’t say because of the stigma they endure, or how deeply proud they are. The thought of “being a scrounger” is so hurtful to so many. And this portrayal of people in poverty being devious is so painful to too many good people who are really getting a rough deal through no fault of their own. Living in poverty sometimes means accepting handouts— but people really don’t want this, they just want a fairer deal, the chance to thrive instead of just survive. Cumberland Council received just over £2 million through the Household Support Fund to help those most in need with access to essentials. But even with these resources, the demand is overwhelming. It’s a stark reflection of the reality many are living in and a call for systemic change. Supporting people is about dignity, equity, and ensuring no one is left behind. Let’s keep working towards that better deal. #Poverty

Insecure housing and the looming threat of homelessness are critical issues that perpetuate the cycle of poverty. When families lack stable housing, they face constant uncertainty. This national Anti-Poverty Week, we support the Anti-Poverty Week network in their campaign: Everybody’s Home. Housing is a human right. Homelessness exacerbates poverty by stripping people of their dignity and limiting their access to essential services. It creates barriers to education, employment, and healthcare, trapping individuals in a relentless cycle of hardship. The research has shown that when children grow up in poverty the first 5 years of their life, it can have significant impacts on their development. Children do well when they are supported to do so. This support includes secure housing. QCOSS, Anglicare Southern Queensland #antipovertyweek2024 #endchildpoverty #raisetherate #everybodyshome

**Title: The Unseen Struggle: Poverty's Grasp on Millions** 👎👎👎 Follow me Muhammad Ramzan Poverty remains an unyielding challenge for millions across the globe, a silent crisis that infiltrates every aspect of life. For those trapped in its vicious cycle, daily existence becomes a struggle for survival, with basic necessities like food, shelter, and healthcare often out of reach. This widespread issue is not confined to distant lands; it lurks in our own communities, affecting neighbors, families, and friends. Children, particularly, suffer the most, with limited access to education and opportunities, perpetuating a generational cycle of deprivation. The fight against poverty is not just about providing aid but addressing the systemic inequalities and economic structures that sustain it. Efforts must focus on creating sustainable development, empowering individuals with education and job opportunities, and ensuring fair access to resources. It's a call to action for governments, organizations, and individuals to unite in combating this pervasive issue. By acknowledging the reality of poverty and committing to meaningful change, we can pave the way for a future where everyone has the chance to thrive. #Poverty #GlobalIssue #EconomicInequality #SocialJustice #HumanRights #EndPoverty #ChildPoverty #Hunger #Homelessness #HealthcareAccess #EducationForAll #SustainableDevelopment #Empowerment #CommunitySupport #Charity #NonProfit #EconomicReform #FairWages #BasicNeeds #FutureGenerations

#UnitedForALICE’s new data on hardship for 2021 to 2022 is consistent with an unsettling trend that has spanned more than a decade. In Washington, from 2010 – the end of the Great Recession – to 2022: 🏠 The total number of households rose by 18%... 🏠 Households in #poverty increased by 1%... 🏠 …And the number of ALICE households grew by 44% While the increase in households living in poverty is relatively small, the stark increase in the number of households who are ALICE (asset limited, income constrained, employed) demonstrates a troubling trend of more and more households in our state and across the nation who can't afford the basics. In Whatcom County, 38% of our community struggles to make ends meet. United with our network of nonprofit, generous donors, and community stakeholders, we are working to ensure that our friends and neighbors have a roof overhead and food on the table, and that those who struggling financially have access to the tools and resources they need to thrive.
