Be Like Mike: Michael R. Bloomberg, the billionaire and former New York City mayor, has set a new benchmark for philanthropic support of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) with his historic $600 million donation to the country's four leading Black medical schools. This unprecedented investment will have a generational impact, significantly bolstering the endowments of institutions like Meharry Medical College, Howard University College of Medicine, and our member institution Morehouse School of Medicine - all of which play a crucial role in educating a disproportionate share of Black doctors in the United States. Everyone with the means to do so should strive to be like "Mike" - to leverage their resources in service of creating a more just, equitable, and inclusive society. Bloomberg's $600 million gift sets a new standard that philanthropists across America would do well to emulate. #bloomberg #philantropymonth #uncf #belikemike

Check out my interview with ForbesBLK on the recent settlement in the Fearless Fund case.
The recent settlement in the Fearless Fund case is a victory for the Fund, charitable organizations, and investors who care about equity. The settlement allows the Fearless Fund to continue operating its current and future programs and avoids legal precedent that could endanger funding focused on addressing racial inequities. Alphonso David, Co-Counsel for the Fearless Fund, discussed the outcome in a conversation with ForbesBLK. https://lnkd.in/eZUaJh4q

At iF, we want to make one thing clear: Black people are owed a debt. It's not enough for foundations to fund and advocate for reparations. We must examine our own origins and the harm caused by philanthropic wealth-building. Click below to read more from iF's Co-CEOs, Temi F. Bennett, Esq. & Hanh Le in "Our Foundation’s Origin Story Shows Why Philanthropy Must Acknowledge its Role in Perpetuating Injustice." https://lnkd.in/ebV7Kd2y

Monterey County Black Caucus (MCBC), a grantee partner of Irvine's #PriorityCommunities initiative, works to anchor Black leadership and power-building to address structural racism and economic inequities. They also provide healing spaces that allow Black residents to unpack, reflect, learn, and share what the needs are in the community. How can #philanthropy better support MCBC’s work and the Black community? MCBC’s Rosalyn Green says, “They should continue providing funding, understanding the needs of the communities, and recognizing that one-time funding is not a cure-all. It’s important that funders dive deep into the proposals, listen to stories beyond those proposals, and take the time to come out and connect with the organizations and communities they support to see how funds are being used. Highlighting our work in philanthropic spaces is also important so that other funders can catch the fire and say, ‘We want to be part of that too.’” Learn more about MCBC at https://irvine.ly/mcbc Photo credit: Monterey County Black Caucus

Black philanthropy plays a crucial role in addressing systemic inequalities and fostering community development. Historically, philanthropy has roots in the early charitable acts of African Americans, who established mutual aid societies and community funds in the face of discrimination and exclusion from mainstream funding sources. Despite this legacy, Black-led nonprofits remain the most underfunded organizations in the sector. According to recent statistics, Black nonprofits receive only a small fraction of philanthropic dollars—around 2% of total charitable giving—despite serving communities that face significant challenges. This disparity highlights the urgent need for increased support to empower these organizations, which are vital for advancing social justice and economic equity. As we celebrate Black Philanthropy Month, let’s commit to uplifting Black voices and supporting the critical work of Black nonprofits. Together, we can foster a more equitable landscape for all. #GiveBackGiveBlacklex Give here: https://lnkd.in/eUayj3CM
