A case study: Near Real-time Flood Modelling applied in response to the Kakovka Dam disaster. Here is a recently published article in the Journal of Coastal and Riverine Flood Risk about our collective efforts during the disaster in Ukraine, in collaboration with Bas Jonkman Bas Agerbeek Maxim Knepflé Florian Witsenburg and many others. The future is becoming more unpredictable. As the climate changes, it becomes harder to rely on the past to predict future flooding. This article provides valuable insights into the lessons we’ve learned and shows that we are only at the beginning of a completely new way of addressing water-related disasters. A significant and exciting challenge for 2025 and beyond.

It's actually true that the scale and impact of climate change we see today are unprecedented, climate patterns have naturally changed throughout the history. However, the speed and intensity of these drastic changes are largely driven by anthropogenic activities, and this is what makes the situation urgent. The recent devastation of typhoons in the Philippines, especially Typhoon Kristine, reveals that while our government made efforts in implementing flood controls measures, they remain inadequate. Our President Bongbong Marcos is correct in emphasizing that climate change on this scale has never happened before. This is the reason why we need to have comprehensive yet a forward-thinking solutions in addressing climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction. Flood control isn't enough, it is essential to have improved flood control systems when dealing extreme weather events brought by Climate Change. This failure highlights several gaps to outdated designs, neglected maintenance and urban mismanagement. President Marcos’ recognition of the unique challenges posed by modern climate change is a call to action, we need to have comprehensive climate change adaptation such as modernize infrastructure, nature-based solutions, strengthen urban planning, empowering communities, enhance early warning systems, and additional funds for climate adaptation. Additionally, the government must recognize that flood control is not just a one-time solution but a continuous process which requires planning, execution, and evaluation. The only way forward is to have a comprehensive climate change adaptation. After all, adapting in this unprecedented climate reality isn't just a necessary but it is a responsibility. #ClimateChangeadaptation #DisasterRiskManagement Watch the video:

My latest episode with Alex Vengerovsky of Spatial Risk Systems is about this topic https://lnkd.in/eQJeK68m
Last year, four massive floods in the United States caused more than USD 1 billion in damage each. Climate change is making floods larger, less predictable, and costlier. Insurers need powerful tools to accurately assess and quantify their exposure to evolving flood risks. To address this, we have now integrated Fathom's high-resolution US flood maps into CatNet®, our digital natural hazard atlas. Complementing CatNet®'s existing resources with Fathom's US Flood Map empowers insurers to create more sophisticated climate-driven flood risk scenarios. Flooding is the most pervasive natural disaster and flood risks are increasing in many parts of the world due to climate change, rapid population growth, and economic activity. Simulated future global flood hazard maps show that future emissions reduction can hold flood hazards largely constant this century but coastal flooding will increase drastically regardless.
