Today, on International Women's Day, I ask that you take a moment to recognize the disparities that exist for women, especially women of color, to receive adequate healthcare. According to research from Jillian McKoy at Boston University, black women are more likely than other racial and ethnic groups to die from cardiovascular disease, hypertension, stroke, lupus, and several cancers. This is a pressing issue that hits home for many of us, including myself, following the unexpected loss of my mother in January. As we seek to #InspireInclusion this #IWD2024, let's be advocates and change agents for women who are not heard or taken seriously with their healthcare concerns. Let's attend doctor visits with our loved ones. Let's help them monitor and track symptoms, reactions and side effects. In doing so, we will work to address this disparity head-on and ensure that everyone has access to fair, humane, and compassionate medical care.
