We are still in the early days of fintech and much like the auto industry a century ago, fintech infrastructure has been made up of companies specializing in individual "components" of a much larger moving machine. - Data aggregators (Plaid/MX/Finicity/Yodlee) are the engines. - Data transformers (FinGoal/Ntropy/Pave) the transmissions. - Transaction specialists (Orum/Dwolla/Sila/Zum Rails/Straddle) the steering. The fintech space has witnessed a phenomenal digitization of systems and processes in recent years. However, this perception often limits itself to customer-centric interactions, overlooking the underlying technology infrastructure, which defeats the whole purpose. The recent security lapses and data leaks by large financial institutions have opened up the reality along similar lines. Institutions fail to take any initiatives stating extremely higher costs and risks involved in the transformation. But how long can they sustain this? It is not that institutions lack funds to take up technology transformations, but priorities lie more in marketing spends and expanding customer base than spending on technology. A 100 crore marketing budget may be associated with a 5 crore technology budget or may be even lesser. Changing the backend technology and infrastructure is not a 3 or 6 month project. It will be a multi-year project. Institutions need to commit to that sooner than later to ensure that their marketing spends don't go down the drain, when an event causes their customers to lose trust on the systems.
