The FAFSA does not provide a complete picture of most students' financial circumstances. Moreover, as a student's SAI moves further away from federal and state need-based aid thresholds, that picture becomes increasingly less accurate (and exaggerated at the expense of the consumer). Worse still, the assumptions that underlie the FAFSA formula privilege a traditional, upper-middle class version of family finances and penalizes those who are often compelled to engaged in other equally valid means of financial organization and planning. Let's not kid ourselves into thinking that the FAFSA definition of "need" is value-neutral or that it treats everyone equally. So why is the public continually told that everyone should complete a FAFSA, even when it clearly may not be in everyone's best interest? #collegeadmissions #collegeplanning #collegecounseling #financialplanning #financialaid #financialfreedom #fafsa #equity #equityineducation #parents #parentsofteens

Because you can’t win if you don’t play. The FAFSA is the game board that the financial game is played. The referee is the federal government, ready to hand out fines and jail time for those that look to cheat. When you understand the rules of the game, you stand a chance to win. Why take away the game board? Without the FAFSA everyone loses. Have you seen the formula work for lower income families? Our lower income families get to go to 85K/year colleges for half the cost of an in-state college. I don’t see them complaining about the FAFSA. Just because we don’t understand how the FAFSA works doesn’t mean we need to get rid of it. It just means we need to learn.
The lack of college price transparency isn't just hurting the public. It's holding colleges and universities back from figuring out how to provide a better value at a better price.

Opinions wanted. Please read attached post. I have always told may families to complete the FAFSA because there is no downside. And if they want low-interest govt loans and work study, the FAFSA is the proxy for those. I also feel that the middle class gets squeezed- they do not make enough to pay the exorbitant college costs of tuition, and they make too much to be Pell eligible and receive need-based aid. Merit aid aside…thoughts???? #fafsa #payingforcollege #financialaid #collegeconsultant

Whether or not the FAFSA fiasco translates into an enrollment dip remains to be seen. But, according to our VP Lisa Kasper, “We will likely see enrollment delays.” Students who are college-focused will overcome the hurdles to enroll. But, “The ones on the fence might get there at the eleventh hour — I think we can expect more of those mid-to-late August enrollments.” August will probably be an especially crunchy crunch time for fall enrollment. So, Kasper says to be sure to lead by example. "Be a force for positivity,” says our VP. Looking for tips to overcome the FAFSA fiasco? An unknown author once wrote, "true bonding happens when we are all mad about the same thing." This morning, many financial aid administrators, enrollment administrators, students, parents, college access professionals, school counselors, etc. are all frustrated with the FAFSA debacle and other outstanding aid issues. But let's channel our collective anger into constructive action that leads to positive change. The time is coming where all we'll be able to do is put our heads down and work. And we will. The profession is strong and full of noble people. In that work, let's find innovation, creativity, and solidarity. Let's also take time to care for ourselves and for one another, as I think we will need it in the coming months. #FAFSA #FinancialAid #HigherEducation #CollegeAccess #StudentSuccess #Solidarity

In early June, NASFAA sent a letter ✉️ asking Congress to take action to require the Department of Education to delay institutional reporting requirements for its new gainful employment and financial value transparency regulations to July 2025. Delaying the reporting deadline will help ease the burden our members are facing due to the unprecedented issues associated with ED’s rollout of the 2024-25 #FAFSA and the devastating impacts those issues have had on financial aid offices and students. 🚨 The latest news that institutional batch corrections will not be available for the 2024-25 FAFSA will redirect even more time from other important tasks as financial aid administrators will have to submit FAFSA corrections on a one-by-one, manual basis. ⏰ Time is short, and the Department must implement our numerous requested concessions so financial aid administrators can focus on what counts right now — helping students achieve their dreams of attending college, no matter their financial circumstances. You can join our advocacy efforts 📢 by contacting your representatives. We compiled resources to make it as easy as possible for you ▶️ https://ow.ly/yXYk50SOmJU

The California Dream Act Application (CADAA) is now open for more students! First-time FAFSA filers who are eligible for federal financial aid have faced challenges with the new FAFSA application if one or more of their contributors doesn’t have a Social Security Number. The CADAA traditionally provides a pathway for thousands of California students who deserve access to financial aid to help them achieve a higher education. Now, CSAC hopes it will offer an option for students and families who may be struggling to complete the FAFSA before the May 2 state priority deadline. Students can complete CADAA at dream.csac.ca.gov. #FAFSA #CADreamAct #FinancialAidTips #HigherEducation #CollegeApplications #CaliforniaScholarship #ScholarshipForCollege
