Over the last 12 months we’ve been really active within the space created by mandating biodiversity net gain in land development. Schedule 7A of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 (as inserted by Schedule 14 of the Environment Act 2021) currently mandates that each relevant development project delivers a measurable increase in biodiversity value of at least 10%. But at TG, we don’t just strive for the minimum requirement, we use our experience to provide advice that creates the right type of habitats in the right places! Our ecologists, arboricultural consultants, landscape planners and green / blue infrastructure specialists work closely together and with external consultants to ensure that creating habitat isn’t for the sake of creating habitat. We strive to make sure that our designs and recommendations reflect the needs of local wildlife, targeting species which are in local and national decline. Our aim is to make sure wildlife can thrive while allowing development projects to also deliver meaningful benefits to mental health and wellbeing. As proponents of nature conservation, we're always excited to read research findings that show the importance of urban habitats in supporting biodiversity. 🌴 A recent Yale University study, published by the Yale School of the Environment’s Yale Environment 360 publication, demonstrates how researchers and city managers around the globe are recognising the importance of urban nature and wildlife habitats. The article suggests this realisation may be "the start of an urban wildlife movement"! See: https://lnkd.in/gthf56GG Creating space for nature in cities takes many forms — from parks and reserves to rooftop gardens, community gardens, and Nature Blocks. What's clear is that we can all take action to support nature in cities by establishing Nature Blocks in our backyards or on our balconies. By making space for nature to thrive in cities, collectively we can ensure its long-term survival, resilience and functioning, while enjoying many related ecological, cultural, and spiritual benefits. 🌸 Find out more about how to create your own Nature Block by downloading the CVA app today! Love this!! Urban ecology and wildlife programs are vital if we are serious about ecological conservation. However, ever so often the urban landscape is considered as terrestrial. Yet, the marine & coastal environment has been severely compromised by urbanisation and is often under represented in these conversations. Considering the impacts from climate change (sea level rise, more severe storms & more frequently) and an urban landscape that often dominates the coast, leaving very little room for natural migration. What does urban ecology look like for the coastal environment? And yes, I would love your thoughts!

Comhairle Cathrach na Gaillimhe / Galway City Council is applying Bluesky's unique National Tree Map (NTM) data to assist the development of strategic planning policy designed to protect and support wildlife trying to survive in dwindling habitats due to the expansion of urban areas. The NTM data was used in a study by the Vincent Wildlife Trust (VWT) to understand the functional connectivity of landscape features such as hedgerows and treelines. The study considered a number of features to identify key ecological corridors and stepping stones to protect and enhance them in the future. The output map also highlighted barriers to movement which would need to be addressed to support wildlife movement through and around the city. “The decline in biodiversity in Ireland, including Galway City, has been caused largely by habitat loss driven by changing land use,” commented Paula Kearney, Biodiversity Officer at Galway City Council. Creating stepping stones for urban wildlife: A key to thriving cities 🏙️🌿 Our cities are not home to just us humans - they're home to countless native species too! This newly published research reveals how strategically placed green spaces can connect isolated habitats, giving urban wildlife a chance to not just survive but thrive in an urban environment. Here’s what was discovered: → Habitat fragmentation is a big challenge for city-dwelling wildlife. It creates isolated patches that make it difficult for species to survive. → Small green spaces can act as "stepping stones" between larger habitats. These stepping stones allow species to move safely between areas, finding food, shelter, and mates along the way. → These spaces benefit small creatures like blue-banded bees and mole crickets especially. These species struggle to navigate urban landscapes, but connected green spaces can help make a huge difference for their survival and numbers. → Urban nature is so important for human well-being and child development too. Green spaces in cities help reduce stress, improve physical health, and foster social connections. Adding green spaces to urban areas isn't just about helping wildlife. It's about making our cities healthier, happier, and more livable for everyone. Strategically placing these green spaces can also help us adapt to climate change and give residents fun places to enjoy. 🌱 🏙️ Want to learn how you can help create a wildlife-friendly city? According to recent research, city-dwelling wildlife like fairywrens face a tough situation when their habitats become fragmented by urban development. With the nearest green spaces cut off by busy roads and open fields, finding a new, safe home becomes a serious challenge. The good news? Experts have found that creating strategically placed green spaces to link these isolated patches can significantly benefit wildlife. By connecting habitat fragments with green corridors, we can help species like fairywrens, bees, and crickets move more freely and thrive in urban environments. It’s a promising way to enhance both biodiversity and green spaces in the city. #UrbanWildlife #HabitatFragmentation #GreenCities #Biodiversity

Our consultation on input to nature network mapping and how development can deliver biodiversity enhancement is now open. Biodiversity enhancement is a new requirement for most developments in national planning policy. How much enhancement should be provided and where, should reflect the needs of local ecology and people. Nature Networks are also a key requirement and will be visualised as connections on a map linking nature-rich sites. Developers are expected to protect and enhance these networks. To ensure nature networks provide the most value, we're asking for your input into where they should go (and where they shouldn’t), where the nature rich sites, restoration projects and restoration opportunities are that will provide the scaffolding for them. We're looking to tailor our approach to the local area, its wildlife, habitats and communities. Our consultation is open until 18 August. We welcome input from everyone and in particular: - landowners or managers with existing nature-rich sites or projects, - community groups working on nature restoration - or developers and communities with ideas on how they might be affected or contribute to nature networks and enhancement. It was just over five years ago that the U.S. Department of the Interior committed itself to identifying and conserving wildlife migration corridors. Since then, it's been a beautiful story told by cutting edge science, strong state and Tribal collaboration, and most importantly, big time conservation impact. Check out some stats related to the endeavor. HT to Interior, as well as USDA (a whole nother story) for all the hard work, and cheers to many more years of successfully conserving ecological connectivity. https://lnkd.in/gFVADkBY

🌿 Happy Rewilding Day! Today, we come together to celebrate the significance of rewilding our delicate planet. It is crucial that we harness the intricate networks that govern the natural systems of which we are a part, to restore balance in the environment. This equilibrium is vital for our coexistence with all living beings on this planet. Rewilding is about actively restoring habitats, reintroducing native species, and re-establishing our connection with the natural world. Various approaches to rewilding exist, ranging from tree planting and habitat restoration to the creation of new wildlife corridors or green corridors that serve as vital pathways, allowing wildlife to roam freely across fragmented landscapes. If we embrace these strategies within all construction projects and locally at home, we can make remarkable strides in rewilding our planet, revitalising biodiversity, and fostering healthier, more resilient ecosystems for both present and future generations to enjoy. #rewildingday2024 #rewilding #biodiversity #wildlife #naturesnetworks

How do we know if restoration efforts are working? By eavesdropping! Over the past three years, bio-acoustic monitoring at the Bank Australia Conservation Reserve has shown that the endangered South-eastern Red-tailed Black Cockatoo is using both artificial nest boxes and natural tree hollows. With an estimated population of just 1,500, these birds are in dire need of a population boom. Recording the birds' calls with bio-acoustic monitoring gives ecologists and conservation researchers vital data to better support the species. And while fledging hasn’t been successful yet at the reserve, habitat restoration efforts are ongoing to help boost their chances. 🌱 #BiodiversityMonth
