The important issue of police use-of-force and de-escalation training has been on-going for years! Regrettably, there is no coordinated effort by the major police stakeholder associations, police colleges and academic subject matter experts in Canada, to research and standardize this critical police knowledge and training. I complement Chief Gary Conn and his CACP Committee for trying to do so. However, a National Centre of Policing Excellence would have a mandate to do this including many other critically important police training subjects. At present, there is no central repository of evidence-based training or education standards for our police officers in Canada. While sincere in their efforts, most if not all, provincial and local training police training entity in Canada work in silos. The potential of a National Centre of Policing Excellence in Canada is incredible and infinite! Imagine one central repository of all current and relevant subject matter; and that is also responsible for research and circulation of best practices to all major police stakeholder groups, police organizations, colleges and training entities. https://lnkd.in/gt629BZh

It also involves an array of actors and agencies, such as educational institutions which have a long and important relationship with police organizations. This book examines the role of education and training in the development of police in the contemporary world. Bringing together specialist scholars and practitioners from around the world, the book examines training methods in the UK, the USA, Australia, Canada, China, France, Hungary , India, the Netherlands, St Lucia and Sweden.”

A feed that provides a summary of policing challenges currently : There have been a series of actions, which when taken in unity, have created dysfunction. You cannot look at performance before you repair the engine. In the microcosm of meeting targets we can ignore the responsibility we have to ensure we maintain the capacity to meet them. The “ big picture “ always has to be the primary consideration. The police manage to do it in operations but for some reason not with the organisation as a whole. In leadership we have too much focus leadership on what , and very little on why. “Why”creates the focused attention to maintain capability. It ensures there is allignment between actions. You cannot serve two masters, public opinion and purpose at the same time. You cannot run an organisation to focus on what people think, when that is not its core function. The success we have in operations is that public opinion is a consideration while purpose drives activity. That needs to be reflected in the decision making about the organisation. Purpose is the point. It would be great to see some views on how you can run an organisation by focusing on disparate targets.

Remember this image? How having officers doing degrees was "sucking the life out of the force" and how eliminating the degree entry route would "free up 100,000 hours of police officer time" by returning training in-house "to train them in the right way"? Or that "The public don’t want police officers sat in classrooms beyond their short initial training period, they want them to be out on the streets as soon as possible" https://lnkd.in/eew79tiz It turns out, from my own research, that the public actually DO want officers to be better educated: https://lnkd.in/eWdQ8nQQ Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary are now recruiting once again for the #PCDA programme! https://lnkd.in/eusmKFva I am actually very glad that evidence has helped the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Hampshire and Isle of Wight and the force to review their decision, which to me shows strong #leadership - when you are prepared to admit an error and correct it. Although, I do note the lack of comparable fanfare for this decision as to the previous one... #Police #PoliceTraining #PoliceEducation #Policing #PCER #Policing

🌟 **Unlocking Potential with Soft Skills at Unlock Drama** 🌟 At Unlock Drama, we firmly believe in the transformative power of soft skills for rehabilitation. Aligned with HM Prison and Probation Service's commitment to offering second chances through skill development, our programs prioritise the cultivation of essential soft skills among participants. Why Focus on Soft Skills? Soft skills like communication, empathy, teamwork, and problem-solving are crucial for enabling individuals to engage effectively in prison regimes and rehabilitation processes. These skills are not just about personal development—they are vital for preparing participants for successful reintegration into society. Our Approach: Through our innovative drama-based methods, Unlock Drama provides a dynamic environment where participants can explore and develop these skills in a supportive setting. Our workshops are designed to: - **Enhance Communication**: Participants learn to express themselves clearly and listen to others, fostering better relationships and understanding within diverse groups. - **Build Empathy**: By stepping into different roles, participants gain insights into other people's experiences and perspectives, crucial for personal and social rehabilitation. - **Strengthen Teamwork**: Collaborative exercises reinforce the value of working together, which is essential in both custodial settings and the outside world. - **Promote Problem-Solving**: Engaging in drama challenges participants think creatively and find solutions, preparing them for future challenges in education, training, or employment. Impact: Our commitment goes beyond workshops; it's about embedding these soft skills into participants' lives, helping them navigate their journeys within custody and upon release, effectively reducing the risk of re-offending. By aligning with the HM Prison and Probation Service's strategies, Unlock Drama contributes to a rehabilitation culture that not only supports participants during their sentence but also empowers them for future success. #UnlockDrama #Rehabilitation #SoftSkills #PrisonReform #Education
