Yet, its impact extends far beyond, influencing popular cross-platform titles like Fortnite and Apex Legends.
As LiveOps becomes standard in modern releases, is there anything left for PC games to learn from how mobile games approach LiveOps? 👀
Metaplay's Mika Patiala would argue there is.

Last night I watched the complete gamescom Opening Night Live live stream and it was a delight to see Mobile Games had its fair share. A total of 9 games were showcased that are either available or coming to mobile.
1️⃣ Infinity Nikki
Developed by Infold Games, Infinity Nikki is the latest instalment in the popular Nikki series. This open-world adventure title is being led by former Legend of Zelda director Kentaro Tominaga.
Infinity Nikki was previously announced in 2022 and will launch on PC, PlayStation, Android, and iOS. A global closed beta test was announced during the showcase, and pre-registration is now open.
2️⃣ Monument Valley 3
UK-based ustwo games is bringing back its iconic puzzle franchise with Monument Valley 3. Celebrating the 10th anniversary of the original game in April 2024, both the original and its sequel, Monument Valley 2, will soon be available on Netflix Games. Monument Valley 3 is set to launch on December 10, 2024, exclusively on Netflix.
3️⃣ Delta Force
The gameplay for Delta Force was showcased, with the PC Early Access scheduled for Q4 2024. As it nears a September release in China, this title will be available on Mobile, PC, and Console platforms soon.
What's more? TiMi Studio Group and Level Infinite rebranded the title from "Delta Force: Hawk Ops" to "Delta Force" to bridge the gap between franchise veterans and newcomers. A minor change in the logo was also revealed.
4️⃣ Squid Game Unleashed
Netflix Games-exclusive Squid Game Unleashed had its announcement trailer revealed, staying true to the original series with its unique and visually appealing art style. This highly anticipated game promises to be a major hit upon release.
5️⃣ Dark and Darker Mobile
Dark and Darker Mobile from KRAFTON Inc. premiered its pre-registration trailer, filled with cinematic action and storytelling. Although gameplay details were sparse, the trailer sets the stage for what’s to come. Pre-registration is now open with a launch scheduled in Q4, 2024.
6️⃣ Floatopia
NetEase Games introduced Floatopia, a whimsical life simulation game set on floating islands. The game’s world premiere trailer highlighted its charming and adventurous features and only mentioned a 2025 release on Consoles & PC.
However, NetEase Games later confirmed to us that it is also coming to Android and iOS. “Floatopia is a breath of fresh air,” stated Ethan Wang, Senior Vice President, NetEase Inc.
7️⃣ HoYoverse Games - Genshin, HSR, and ZZZ
HoYoverse made a strong impression with several major showcases. Genshin Impact captured attention with a Natlan gameplay reveal and announced its arrival on Xbox later this year. Zenless Zone Zero and Honkai: Star Rail also delivered exciting updates, including a Honkai Star Rail crossover with the Fate/Stay Night anime series, scheduled for Q3 2025.
Did you watch the whole ONL showcase? If yes, which was your favourite?

The latest report from Newzoo on the game industry reveals interesting aspects on the current state of gaming.
In 2023, despite a 2.6% growth in the PC and console gaming market, gamers spent most of their playtime on older established titles like Fortnite, GTA V, and Call of Duty.
Newzoo's report reveals that only 66 titles accounted for 80% of all playtime, with 60% of that time spent on games six years old or older.
Over half of the playtime on new games in 2023 was dedicated to annual sequels like Madden or NBA, leaving only 8% for new non-annual titles such as Diablo IV or Baldur's Gate III.
The dominance of established franchises and live-service games like Fortnite poses a significant challenge for developers, as they struggle to compete for players' attention in an increasingly crowded market.

Mobile gaming has been on the rise for a while now.
Games like PUBG, Call of Duty, and Among Us have all found a place on our phones.
But what does this mean for the industry as a whole?
Firstly, it means that there are more players than ever before. This means more opportunities for developers, publishers, and marketers.
Secondly, it means that the way we interact with games is changing. Mobile games are often played in short bursts, on the go. Developers need to create games that are easily accessible and can be played in bite-sized chunks.
Finally, it means that the lines between casual and hardcore gaming are blurring. Mobile games are becoming more sophisticated and complex, challenging the notion that mobile gaming is only for casual players.
As the industry continues to evolve, it will be exciting to see what the future holds for mobile gaming.
Did you know that by 2021 a whopping 55.5 billion gaming apps were downloaded worldwide? I am sure most of us have played at least one mobile game. It means mobile games are easily accessible and engaging and that's why everybody likes to play them.
The future is near when the mobile gaming industry will surpass US$100 billion. A three decade old industry is finally taking its pace to shot towards the big numbers. But why now?
Yes, accesibility is one of the reasons but there are more. Here's a recently published article by me at Jumpstart Media for you.
If you want to know more about the mobile gaming growth, check out the link in the comments. 👍
Are An online game is a video game that is either partially or primarily played through the Internet or any other computer network available.[1] Online games are ubiquitous on modern gaming platforms, including PCs, consoles and mobile devices, and span many genres, including first-person shooters, strategy games, and massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPG).[2] In 2019, revenue in the online games segment reached $16.9 billion, with $4.2 billion generated by China and $3.5 billion in the United States.[3] Since the 2010s, a common trend among online games has been to operate them as games as a service, using monetization schemes such as loot boxes and battle passes as purchasable items atop freely-offered games.[4][5] Unlike purchased retail games, online games have the problem of not being permanently playable, as they require special servers in order to function.Debmalya Bhattacharjee
