What an amazing week of winner's stories! Kicking off week two, we have your 2024 Best Newcomer, Amy Barber from WSP. 🎉 It’s great to see you win an award Amy, could you tell us a bit about your nomination? My nomination was focussed on key successes and learnings since joining WSP, including examples of how I collaborate with colleagues to share work-winning improvements and use APMP best practice techniques within our bid writing processes. To make my nomination stand out, I included lots of quantified evidence and feedback. I also tried to show how I have applied learnings from the training I’ve received (such as from the Bid Writing micro-certification from Strategic Proposals) in my day-to-day role and how this has supported my overall learning journey. 🎉How does it feel to win the Best Newcomer award? As somebody new to the industry, this award confirms that a move into this new career was right for me. It was nerve-racking to make the move with no bidding experience, but this nomination really does show that it was worth it! To be shortlisted while working for WSP also means a lot. We’re working on some of the UK’s most innovative and exciting projects and it’s amazing to work with multidisciplinary technical teams and feel part of projects that really will make a difference to society. 🎉 What pearls of wisdom would you like to share? For any newcomers who are taking part next year, I would encourage you to try to quantify your successes and save any feedback you receive. I had the pleasure of attending the B2B Expo at the Apollo Hotel in Basingstoke today, where I represented TKD24. From the moment I arrived, I was welcomed by enthusiastic professionals who were eager to showcase their companies unique skills, services, and innovative processes. This experience highlighted how important Expos are for businesses, especially local ones, in attracting new clients and potential employees. As a recent graduate starting my career, this event was incredibly valuable. I gained insight into how businesses across various sectors operate, got a better understanding of their processes, and learned about the challenges they face and the strategies they use to overcome them. Engaging with business directors and fellow new starters helped me appreciate the diversity of approaches across industries and how essential adaptability and innovation are for success. During the Expo, I was approached by an employee from an organisation that facilitates learning services for Project Management qualifications. This conversation quickly became incredibly engaging as we discussed my aspirations to become a Project Manager in the future. They highlighted that I could complete an APM qualification in advance, providing me with a valuable step toward being qualified for the position. One of the most important takeaways was the opportunity to meet people face-to-face, and learn directly from their expertise. Discussing challenges, hearing success stories, and getting a deeper look into what drives different organisations are opportunities that only an event like this can offer. For someone like me, just beginning my career, Expos are an invaluable platform not only for learning but also for making connections providing mutual benefit, that can shape future opportunities.

Salary is NOT everything. Sometimes, your most valuable career decisions are NOT the ones that boost your earnings. They are the ones that expand your learning. Back in 2004, I took on a role as the Team Lead at Schlumberger in Dubai. On paper, it was an intense assignment with global coverage but wasn’t the most financially lucrative role at that time. Somehow I convinced myself and took the leap, prioritizing the opportunity to learn. That decision led to a 16 year long journey with Schlumberger, spanning multiple geographies and roles. Each step challenged me, contributed to my professional growth, and allowed me to make meaningful contributions to the business, to mention a few: ▸ Global ERP deployment ▸ Complex Operations and M&A in Russia ▸ Legal entities and contracting model restructuring to drive growth and efficiency in Africa ▸ Consistent profitability during multiple round of downturn through strategic sustainable actions ▸ Set up of Finance Shared Services in Malaysia and transformed it into a multi-functional analytical hub for the Eastern Hemisphere in Malaysia The learning curve was steep, but it paid dividends. Along with the learning and contributions, the earnings will come. However, the knowledge, skills, and growth you gain compound over time.
