🚨 ECHA Adds Triphenyl Phosphate to SVHC Candidate List! The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has recently added Triphenyl Phosphate to its Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC), now comprising 242 entries. The substance is known for its endocrine-disrupting properties, is used as a flame retardant and plasticizer in various products like polymers, adhesives, and sealants. Companies are responsible for managing the risks of these chemicals and giving customers and consumers information on their safe use. If the substance is placed on the Authorization List, its use may be further restricted, requiring companies to seek authorization for continued use. Intertek offers testing, consulting, and assessment services for Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) compliance. Triphenyl phosphate, a new addition to the REACH Candidate List. The REACH Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs) was revised on the 7th November 2024, with the addition of Triphenyl phosphate (CAS: 115-86-6). This chemical is used as a plasticiser in the production of polymers, and may be also be present in coated textiles and leathers, adhesives, sealants, cosmetics and personal care products. Triphenyl phosphate may also be added to polymers as a flame retardant treatment, particularly in cellulose nitrate and cellulose acetate. The inclusion of this chemical on the Candidate List does not prohibit it from being present in consumer goods, however, legal obligations will apply if it is present in articles at levels exceeding 0.1%, including registering the product on the SCIP database and submitting a notification to ECHA if more than 1 tonne of the substance is imported into the EU per annum. Currently, these obligations only apply within the EU, as the substance has not yet been listed under UK REACH. SATRA can assist companies by conducting screening testing for high risk SVHCs in consumer goods.
