🌊 Ocean Deserts & Climate Instability: How Bottom-Trawling Fuels Extreme Weather & Hurricanes🌪️ Did you know that the destruction of ocean life through bottom-trawl fishing is creating “deserts” in our seas—and it’s contributing to the extreme weather events that are tormenting us today, like hurricanes? Here’s how it works: 🚫 When bottom-trawl fishing scrapes the ocean floor, it destroys vital ecosystems like kelp forests, seagrass meadows, and cold-water corals. These habitats aren’t just home to marine life—they play a critical role in releasing biological aerosols into the atmosphere. 🌫️ Clouds are not just pure water—they’re built on a scaffolding of biological aerosols. These tiny particles help form the low-lying clouds that reflect sunlight back into space, cooling our planet. Without them, the atmosphere struggles to create these cooling clouds. 🏜️ A desert on land creates instability in the atmosphere. A “desert” in the ocean does the same. When we destroy the life that produces these aerosols, we strip the ocean of its ability to support cloud formation. This means fewer cooling clouds and more heat trapped near the Earth’s surface. 🔥 The result? A destabilized climate and a warmer ocean that fuels stronger, more destructive hurricanes. As the ocean loses its natural balance, it contributes to the chaos we see in our weather systems, creating the perfect storm—literally. 🌍 We need to end destructive bottom-trawling practices to preserve the ocean’s ability to regulate climate, produce cooling clouds, and protect us from extreme weather. The destruction that bottom-trawl fishing causes to our seabeds and marine life is truly horrific. I grew up in an area very close to Scotland that relies heavily on fishing in healthy thriving seas. I know many single boat, line and pot fishing families who act mostly with greater good at heart and who need fairer fishing practices to maintain a generational tradition. Without thriving marine habitats our marine life will suffer irrepaorable damage and devestation. Our waters need to be protected urgently from bottom fishing completely. The Scottish Gov has a live, public consultation open which closes in 1 week, looking at banning this ugly practice completely and in some areas partially at 20 marines sites in Scottish waters. We can all support #Scottishseas by demanding a complete ban across the areas in question, in this public consultation. Flatback sea turtles are unique among sea turtle species in form, function, life cycle, and life history. They have a limited geographic range and restricted breeding distribution; they forage in in the waters off of northern Australia, southern Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea, but they only nest along the coast of Australia. Unlike other sea turtle species, they do not have an oceanic phase or undertake long, open ocean migrations, and are usually found in waters less than 200 feet in depth. Makes you think how our incentives systems work. Intensively farming something lowers final prices as production and output rises but avoids real costs. Who pays for the cleanup; who picks up the upstream costs of our actions today: who is accountable to the waste? If the true costs were to be applied to any pricing model- capitalism would fall over. Prices would rise and access would be denied to the many. I signed this because whilst we reek havoc on our natural ecosystem we stifle true systemic innovation. Incentives need to change- fiscal policies that punish rather than encourage should be met with innovation that focuses on delivering productivity without ecological harm. 🌊🐋 Happy Anniversary to the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary! 🎉 Stellwagen Bank is a true marvel, home to bubble-feeding humpback whales and seabirds galore. That's why, 32 years ago today, Stellwagen Bank was added to the National Marine Sanctuary system, highlighting the area's importance and creating a commitment to conserve this place for generations to come. But our work isn’t done yet – NOAA’s 2020 Condition Report suggests measurable declines in seafloor habitat integrity within the sanctuary, primarily due to direct impacts of bottom-contact gear used in commercial fishing.
