The United States Patent & Trademark Office has proposed fee increases for fiscal year 2025. How will this impact the filing process for patents and trademarks, and what are the specific changes to be aware of? These proposed increases include additional surcharges for patent continuation applications, significant increases in fees for Requests for Continued Examination (RCEs), a general 5% increase in other patent filing fees, and trademark fee increases ranging from 1.5 to 3 times the original cost. Companies, patent prosecutors, and applicants must understand the full scope of these adjustments in order to effectively manage their intellectual property portfolios.
