Our Tampa inside sales team for our surge protection group is hiring. What is surge protection? I like to think of it as the gatekeeper of your electrical equipment's health and wellness. As humans, we have the super power of an immune system and cellular regeneration for healing. Sensitive electronics, not so much. They rely on us to set up preventative measures for them, much like we set up the same for ourselves. Surge protection is one way to ensure the longevity of your equipment, especially when it is maintaining the balance and well-being of hospitals, manufacturing facilities, industrial settings and so much more. But what is a surge? Simply put, a surge is a short, extremely fast (like nanosecond fast), powerful burst of electricity that can be produced by either an external component (i.e. a nearby lightning strike) or an internal component (i.e. the turning on and off of equipment). When a surge is released, it can either have a instant, destructive effect by wiping out sensitive electronics or even causing some equipment to catch fire. Other times it can be smaller bursts that wear down your equipment overtime, creating what we call "electronic rust", which will eventually breakdown the efficacy of your equipment. Relating this to our health it is like experiencing a massive heart attack versus a heart murmur; both can cause damage, but one is more instantaneous than the other. This is an oversimplification of it, but hopefully you get the gist. A surge protection device essentially mitigates those bursts of overcurrent by first condensing them to a level that is safe for your sensitive electronics and then dumps the remaining harmful overcurrent away from the system. I like to call them "gremlin traps". Before surge protection was developed, equipment would catch fire, mysteriously breakdown or just stop working completely. There were tales of little creatures called Gremlins that supposedly destroyed our electronics, rendering them useless or even dangerous. Well, surprisingly there were no little green mischief makers who could not be fed after midnight, exposed to sunlight or have water poured on them. It was in fact that wild and relentless impulse of energy from the aforementioned external and internal factors.
