I must confess that I am very impressed by Volkswagen Group's 🚗 consistent focus on electromobility. ⚡ It is good to see that Thomas Schmall, member of the Board of Management, shares this forward-looking view. Despite a temporary decline in sales of electric cars, VW is increasing its investment in battery technology. 🔋 This not only underlines the company's commitment to technological leadership, but also that it has understood where the future is heading.
And only recently, the next bang: 💥 VW is terminating a large number of works agreements! 🏢 Layoffs are possible! What is VW trying to achieve with this? Does VW finally want to get rid of unnecessary structures? Traditionally, there is a lobby at VW that still clings to old structures. ⛔ A new type of engine - even if it isn’t really new anymore - also requires a new way of thinking at VW. The brakers and blockers must finally go, clearing the way for the future. 🚀
I’m convinced that you can't win the race for technological leadership with old recipes. Nothing less than the future is at stake. The first starting positions belong to others for a long time. At the moment, the German automotive industry is not even starting from the second row, no, we are at best in the midfield. But the race is long, not a sprint but rather a marathon, and there can and will still be time for improvement. 🏎️ 🏁

Zooming out, both Mercedes and BMW join VW in their worsening outlooks. Both brands remain majorly affected by fierce competition in the Chinese markets by local manufacturers producing similar quality for a fraction of the price.

Volkswagen GroupVolkswagen Dieselgate was definitely massive. It is definitely the reason why I didn't consider VW when I was looking at luxury vehicles.
The central problem today, as an outsider, is that you are competing with Chinese EV makers, but manufacturing electric vehicles is not your core competency. You are as destined to lose to Chinese EV makers as Conor McGregor was to lose to Floyd Mayweather.
Conor is great. I love Conor, but I would still put money on Floyd in a boxing match because boxing is his core competency.
In addition, the Chinese population had proportionately more computer and software people than the German populace. So making EVs is definitely their game. Western companies shouldn't even try to compete with them. They can, however, collaborate with them and exchange core competencies. They can help them sell more EVs in the west if they return the favor by helping them sell more luxury ICs in China.
What you can do is double down on your competency. Instead of being the number two in the boxing ring, be the number one in the Octagon. Meaning, go meet your loyal workers. Spend more time among the middle class. Find out what they are distinctively best at. Then put them to use to produce something unparalleled. Unleash it onto the market.
In short, look inside. Find out what makes you distinct. Double down on that. Let go of everything that is not that.
