Law students, not every law school campus is cutthroat. That’s true despite the law school sharing typical competitive markers: —awards for highest scores —OCI’s only for the elite —accolades for grades —a grading curve Certain law schools attract a law student who competes differently, which in turn, leads to an atmosphere of collaboration. In tomorrow’s newsletter, I’ll discuss the kind of competition in law school that leads to mental wellness and growth. So we take that good rivalry into the practice and continue elevating ourselves and those around us! #lawstudent #lawstudents #prelaw #lawschool

Section 10A strikes again in Stevens v Birtic [2024] QDC 160. I do think this is a case that demonstrates the need for better civil pleading education in law schools outside of the major cities. The only way junior lawyers get practical experience with pleading is either by forking out thousands of dollars on CPDs (that they do not have) or by clerking in a multimillion dollar national/international firm. This also ignores the fact that regional junior lawyers do not have access to those clerkship opportunities and clerkships are primarily automated these days to grade point average. Which is fine, but it does ignore the number of people in law school who had to work mulitple jobs to care for families while getting their degrees. #defamationlaw

Yesterday, I wrapped up my first semester teaching Legislative Law at Texas A&M University School of Law. Here are my thoughts: 1) “I believe the children are our future; teach them well and let them lead the way.” 2) Studying legislative law and process is crucial for law school curriculums, as most lawyers litigate based on statutes enacted by legislatures (and written by legislative staff). Regardless of whether one plans to enter legislative public service, a thorough knowledge of the Texas Legislature can enhance any legal practice. Understanding how laws are made helps attorneys better navigate and interpret statutory language in various contexts. 3) Law schools need to promote legislative lawyering as a viable and enticing public sector career. 4) Had a blast; 10/10 would do again.

Law students, you don’t get grades based on your effort. You get the grades when your effort is valuable. You don't have to pull all-nighters every week--that's exhausting and sad. Try a simple system that you get immediate feedback on. Here’s how: --isolate one topic you’ve learned this semester (2 minutes) --transfer everything you prepared/learned about the topic to one document (20 minutes) --organize the topic (1 hour) --write a short practice hypo on the topic (20 minutes) You can confirm if your system is valuable in under two hours. Give it a try! Don’t go full throttle on effort without measuring the value of your actions. #lawstudents #lawstudent #lawschool
