With the planned transition to Net Zero and the intention to electrify transport & heat, people with sound electrical training are key. New electrical technologies demand these skills now. Link this to the devastation caused by the storms that accompany climate change, you just need to scan last weekend's media to see how this pressure will compound.
We are focussed on power quality at utility level initially, first water and shortly power. We now see how plant trips increasingly have their root cause from outside the perimeter. These are now often caused by short voltage sags in the power supply to the site. The DSO and the customer now have to invest to ensure continuity of plants, factories, data centres et al to protect our economy. This is no simple problem and needs innovative solutions often yet to be tried in the UK and in fact, in most nations.
We need to increase the number of electrical apprenticeships in England.
We’ve just launched the #ElectricalSkillsIndex. It analyses how many people in England are starting classroom-only courses compared to apprenticeships. We’ve found that many parts of the country are facing a shocking shortage of electrical skills.
This shortage has broken our electrical skills circuit! We need to complete this circuit to ensure we have a safe and reliable electrification across England.

2wThis is such a great example of what can happen when organizations come together across borders. Partnerships like this not only help build a strong, skilled workforce but also show the power of international cooperation. Programs like the Technician Apprentice initiative open doors for new talent, create opportunities for growth, and push innovation forward. It’s exciting to see TSMC Arizona and the Arizona Commerce Authority working together to shape the future of the industry—this kind of collaboration really makes a difference.
