My day at work....#instructor #teacher As I sit here at the end of another bustling day at the summer coding camp, I can't help but reflect on the journey that brought me here. With my background in business analysis and AI, I had envisioned a different path for my career. But the job market had other plans, and here I am, teaching young minds the basics of coding. At first, I saw this job as a temporary setback. However, as the days have passed, I've come to appreciate the unexpected gifts it's given me. As I explained the fundamentals, I found myself drawing on my AI coursework, translating complex ideas into digestible chunks for young minds. Yes, this isn't where I imagined I'd be when I completed my studies. But as I pack up my things and head home, I'm reminded of the quote: "A dream doesn't become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination, and hard work." My dream of working in AI hasn't disappeared - it's just taking a different path than I expected. This teaching job, which I initially saw as a detour, is actually providing me with valuable skills and experiences. I'm learning patience, improving my communication skills, and gaining a deeper understanding of the fundamentals as I explain them to others. I'm making a difference in these kids' lives, potentially inspiring the next generation of tech innovators. As I continue to apply for positions more aligned with my studies, this job may not be my dream but it's a stepping stone. And with each day, each lesson taught, and each small victory, I'm one step closer to turning that dream into reality. After all, it's not just about reaching the destination; it's about growing, learning, and making an impact along the way. I know in my heart, I will get back to teaching one day. Since I started working as an independent, certain passionate urges have returned. Teaching is one of them. I lectured for hundreds of hours during and after my PhD, developed multiple courses, and had the privilege to influence (and learn from) more bright young minds than I can count. Teaching was rarely rewarding in-the-moment. It was mostly exhausting, frustrating, and time-consuming. My best lectures would resonate with half the room. Students have a +50 h/w workload (and personal lives), so they sleep in lectures, bullshit for high grades, and cut all possible corners. They are human. My job was to transfer useful knowledge into their long-term memory—not easy. Yet in the long term, it has been the most rewarding work I ever did. I never liked to focus only on the few students who could bring a laser focus to class. So I learned to explain interesting things to disinterested people. That skill is worth more than the money I made, and I'm forever grateful to the exhausted students who taught me this 🙏. And still, to this day, I get emails from old students with career and life updates. I meet with them for coffee when they are in the country. I write them recommendation letters and advise them on their startup/work projects. They are some of the coolest people in my network. The list of BEST-paying majors in the future. I saw this list posted earlier as a way to denigrate “soft” knowledge fields. But those STEM and business fields we’ve been pushing as the only ones with value?
