At COP29’s Swedish Pavilion, we brought together industry leaders to chart a path for fashion’s supply chains to achieve net-zero emissions. The message was clear: we have the tools, knowledge, and funding—but unlocking action at scale requires the right collaboration frameworks, granular data, and shared accountability. You can now watch a recording of our panel, featuring our CEO and Co-Founder, Shameek Ghosh, and speakers from the H&M Group, the Apparel Impact Institute, and the World Climate Foundation: https://lnkd.in/gvMrk6he

Had a great conversation with SustainCERT during Climate Week NY 2023. Excited to announce that we will be back in NYC in September to launch and workshop our "Brand & Retailer Sustainable Finance Playbook." The playbook will bring together brands, retailers, suppliers, banks, development banks, and philanthropies to defragment and align various ways to invest in decarbonization, creating demand for suppliers to take on critical factory efficiencies, upgrades & improvements. Join us in creating a more sustainable future for the fashion industry. So what did I talk about in Bangladesh Climate Action Forum today? 1. There is amazing opportunities left untapped in Bangladesh in terms of energy efficiency and savings which can ultimately lead to a lot of savings of expensive fossil fuel import bills the country is struggling with already. The industry and the government needs to come up with a good assessment and plan to address this. Things like improved rating motors, exhaust gas boilers or chillers should have been the norm already, not an exception. 2. Bangladesh has less than 2% renewable energy on its grid and 95% of the textile factories use gas based captive generation. The grid needs to improve quickly to become the reliable source of electricity not the backup. This along with increased generation of RE from solar power plants through innovative mechanism like CPPA to increase private sector participation in RE generation, transmission and distribution. Yes, this is a daunting task in Bangladesh given the single buyer model followed so far but the policies are not stopping us. So why wait? 3. The energy projects are expensive in Bangladesh according to many. This is because of several reasons and some of them are possibly easier to address than othes. How can we de-risk renewable energy projects and make the market attractive for private sector investors to come forward? There are many instruments like insurance and guarantee which can be made available to do exactly that. Thanks a lot Mostafiz Uddin bhai for the invite. Amazing event. Ziaur Rahman bhai and Ahsan Khan Chowdhury quite inspiring to hear from both of you. Looking forward to sip on a cup of tea very soon under the shade of solar panels of first CPPA project in Bangladesh. It was also great to meet a lot of friends and colleagues of the industry today. Do let me know in comments what’s your take on the discussions? What are the challenges we need to address in this Bangladesh 2.0 to make it also decarbonised Bangladesh 2.0

https://lnkd.in/gHJ6mgfH "Companies with a conscience have a lot of work to do. Words are important, but only when they’re backed up by actions. And while we can ignore criticisms about “woke capitalism,” I believe we should also be on guard against greenwashing and skeptical of corporate rhetoric that isn’t backed up by real policy. “Green,” “earth-friendly,” “recycled,” “natural,” “sustainable” — these all sound nice when slapped on a product label. But transparency is key: What are the actual commitments, certifications, metrics and data backing up those claims? Customers want — and have a right — to know the answers. Sound bites about “sustainability” are misleading and don’t help solve the problem. That’s certainly true in our industry. As a whole, the fashion industry is responsible for up to 10 percent of global carbon emissions, tremendous water consumption and landfills full of barely worn products."

The Carbon Literacy Climate Action of the Month for November! 👇 This Carbon Literacy climate action pledge is highly impactful as it promotes the possibility of fully recyclable underwear in the fashion industry. 🧵 By cutting out the use of elastane and using only organic cotton, this pledge shows the potential that fashion manufacturing can have to make more sustainable and fossil-free choices. 💫 Want to take climate action but need help determining where you can make the most impact? Attending #ClimateWeekNYC has been enlightening and inspiring. I appreciate the opportunity to engage with other leaders who share our commitment to sustainable practices and addressing climate change. This week has reinforced the urgency and importance of our collective efforts. The highlight of my week was Cemex’s panel on circularity in the built environment. I want to thank William McDonough, Chief Executive of McDonough Innovation, and Joe Murphy, Executive Lead at the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, for their participation. We had a great conversation about the importance of circularity and the need for a cultural shift, the economic benefits including waste reduction, and the need for lower-carbon products. The challenges of scaling carbon capture were also addressed, noting that two-thirds of decarbonization will come from traditional methods. I also attended the UN’s Private Sector Forum, where we discussed climate action, including bold steps business leaders can take to drive a more sustainable future. At the Industrial Transition Accelerator’s first in-person meeting since COP28, we discussed the need for international standards defining low-carbon or zero-carbon products to provide clarity and confidence to buyers. At Cemex, the sustainable facts label of our Vertua line of more sustainable products is already bringing that mentality to the building materials industry. I am proud of the progress we have made and excited about the initiatives we will roll out in the coming months. Together, we can and will make a difference. #FutureInAction #BuildingABetterFuture #ClimateWeek2024 #Sustainability

📚🌍 Just finished reading "The Ministry for the Future" by Kim Stanley Robinson, recommended by the very talented ESG Expert Rebecca Johansson in my team at Active Brands AS. This compelling novel tackles climate change head-on, exploring practical solutions and global cooperation. I realized how much there is to learn and how a novel makes it easy to understand these complex issues. It's essential reading for anyone in the textile industry, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable practices. Let's take inspiration and act now to secure a sustainable future for our planet! 🌱💪 #ClimateAction #SustainableFuture #TextileIndustry #MustRead

It was an enlightening experience attending #climateweekNYC. The world is awakening to the urgent need for action and decisions before it's too late. Interacting with project developers, investors, media, and the #climate community highlighted the power of collaboration in creating the impact our planet deserves. Some key takeaways from the week: A) Collaboration across industries is crucial. For example, the "Financing Fashion Decarbonization" session showcased how the fashion industry is uniting to reduce its environmental impact through initiatives like The Fashion Pact. Encouraging other industries to form similar coalitions can amplify efforts towards a common net-zero goal. B) Profit should be seen as a by-product, not the primary goal. CEO's and Finance partners need to shift focus from balance sheets to the broader impact of their actions. There is profit to be made, but the priority should be committing to net-zero goals and taking immediate action. C) Investing in the green economy is essential and necessary. Providing the same ease of investment as other sectors can drive significant progress towards a sustainable future. #ClimateAction #Sustainability #GreenEconomy #Collaboration #NetZeroGoal #climateweeknyc #carboncredits #ARR #carbonremovals
