The San Francisco Bay Area is ascendant. A fifth of all open product manager job listings are currently based in the Bay Area. The share has increased 25% over the past two years (from 15% to over 20%) and is still growing. This index is looking at roles at "tech" companies globally, and I'll be tracking this index over time. Big thank you to TrueUp for providing this data. Please bring the Bay Area over here! It’s a shame that the rest of the world is lacking behind. I’d love to be surrounded by tech and product people anywhere I go.
Hey 👋🏼 I am/have one of those Bay Area job openings! https://www.linkedin.com/jobs/view/4026069408
Very interesting - only caveat with senior roles is that by nature, you have “less” leadership roles available - maybe not so much because there’s a “lack of” opportunity In other words - ow many CPO roles can a single company have compared to PM roles? :) Great post as usual
It’s incredible to see the growth in product manager roles, with a fifth of all openings now based there.
I’m interested in tracking software engineer positions and where those roles are based of. With all the LinkedIn fake listings it’s difficult to understand how concentrated job listings are in San Francisco and New York City
Is a good percentage of this perhaps just "normal" re-growth after the previous few years of Bay Area population shrinking / attrition? Combined with AI growth, I would assume...
It's great to see the Bay Area's growth in product manager roles. Exciting times for the tech community.
I wonder how much of this is tied to RTO. Or put differently, do remote PM roles have a similar but negative trend?
Where this index is going to be at next 5 years, moving there next year

3moLenny Rachitsky are you able to see which of those SF job postings have a remote option versus being a truly SF-only based role? It seems like more companies are using SF as their selected location (since LinkedIn requires a valid location for all job posts, including remote positions) and are then listing in the job description that they're open to remote hires. Interested to see if that's skewing the data...
