Early in his keynote address that opened the main content day of the recent Construction Tech Conference, STO Building Group Chief Innovation Officer Robert Leon asked the question: "Why are we here in Chicago at the BuiltWorlds Conference?"
It wasn't an existential question, he assured the crowd. It was a question to set the tone for the rest of the day.
"So maybe some of us are here to learn about the new tech that is being developed or to showcase your innovation solutions," Leon continued. "Some of us are here to help push our industry into a future that is more intelligent, more efficient—certainly safer, more profitable, and also more digitally connected. But whatever your reasons are for being here, I'm sure that we're all here to make some change."
For the next half hour, Leon discussed the history of innovation in technology and how it made its way into construction, revolutionizing the way we build. He talked about the emergence of computers and mobile phones and changes to workflows and communication. And he talked about how we are nearing another precipice of change in our modern era, and what that means for the industry's leaders and professionals.
“Have we changed the paradigm? Yes and no,” Leon said. “Our industry is very innovative, the problem is we’re fractured.”
