The surprise elements for me when I reported on the Indian luxury industry for Fortune India's luxury special issue: 1. Pricing of global luxury brands in India are at par with most evolved luxury markets of the world. In fact prices in Singapore and the Middle East are 7%-10% higher than India. "We can't afford differential pricing any longer," says Georges Kern, CEO, Breitling. 2. India is no longer the dumping yard for last season merchandise of luxury brands. If Hermes or Cartier launch a new product in their home country, it is simultaneously launched in India. 3. Luxury brands no longer look at India as a poor cousin of China. They admit that their biggest mistake was to equate the Indian luxury consumers with the Chinese. "Its much more similar to the western world. Indians are mature toward beauty, art, quality and craftsmanship. The Chinese want to show off," says Carlo Beretta, CEO, Tod's. 4. The Indian luxury market took time to evolve and is still in an evolution phase, but the mindsets of the consumers are more mature than their Chinese counterparts. With the Chinese economy plateauing global luxury brands are shifting a chunk of budgets to India. Do read our story. CHINA‘S LUXURY TASTES ARE CHANGING In essence, we are witnessing the rise of Asian brands, also in luxury. The European monopoly in true luxury will face alternatives that are equally based on high quality craftsmenship of products and experiences, and that are deeply rooted in national cultural heritage of other regions of the world. We see this in China, and as reported in the study published by Together Group and The Future Laboratory about the „New Codes of Luxury in Saudi Arabia“, we can also expect that in the Middle East - rather sooner than later.
