Following up on my friend Ashley Ryall's earlier post about how she didn't want to do business with a company that treated its employees poorly (https://lnkd.in/ecfvP756) The data across multiple studies (Edelman, McKinsey, Porter Novelli) is unequivocal. -63% of consumers buy or advocate for brands based on their beliefs and values -69% of employees think that having societal impact is a strong expectation or deal breaker when considering a job And it's not enough to just make promises. Consumers are wary of hypocrisy or "green washing", because companies often say one thing then do another. - a staggering 82% of consumers think "companies should demonstrate how they are following through on their promises to people, the planet, or society" -76% think companies should have programs that address environmental sustainability - 69% believe "companies should change the way they operate to address diversity and inclusion" The message is clear: customers and prospective employees are telling businesses what they want. The question is, will businesses listen?

Charlie Chaplin once said a day without laugher is a day wasted. Apparently, a 4 year old laughs between 200 - 300 times a day, and as an adult, 12 - 15 times, and for some people I come across, that would be breaking records :) People just seem way too serious nowadays (I think I'm spending too much time on public transport) & everything has to be analysed to death. Sometimes, you just need a good old belly laugh, although the weather doesn't help, and needs to find its charm, soon'ish. It's probably why I laugh at the most inappropriate moment as I always think there's someone worse off, and its never that bad. Smiling, like yawning, is infectious, and it can also give the old immune system a kick in the ass, and raise a few endorphins. I love smiling at the youth who've been watching too many gangster films & it completely derails them because they don't know what to do. Give it a whirl - it's hilarious. I love walking into companies where there is a natural energy & buzz, and people smile at you, rather than do the - are you from outer space, up & down look. If you aren't smiling enough at work, and the sun is still hiding, and you're in the client services department of PR or marketing, check out some of our latest openings. I don't think I've ever seen so may decent opportunities about for a while, and some of the salaries & benefits on offer, are right off the top shelf. Unhappy workers at your company mean I'm not going to buy whatever it is you're selling. Let me explain. If your potential customer hears from a friend that your company has a bad candidate experience or a not-so-great workplace culture, your potential customer isn't going to buy from you. Sitting in my LinkedIn inbox is an InMail message from a private wealth advisor at a big bank where my friend used to work. What he doesn't know is that my friend was mistreated as an employee there and suffered horrendous work anxiety on the regular. Now, this guy is trying to sell his services to help my business IPO. Even if I was looking, I wouldn't go through him. You see, he doesn't understand that I'd only take a meeting with an advisor who represented a brand I believed in - a brand whose employees feel supported, love what they do and are personally invested in their work.
