As someone (like so many others) that became introduced to motorsports through Netflix's 'Drive To Survive' series focused on Formula 1, one question that kept me googling on my phone while watching was "are there female drivers in motorsports?" This Marketplace article explores exactly why there is a glaring absence of female drivers in Formula 1 —and it’s a mix of deeply ingrained cultural and systemic barriers. It’s hard not to feel frustrated when you think about all the incredibly talented women who could have broken into the sport but haven’t had the same opportunities. As someone who believes deeply in creating space for women to succeed, this got me thinking: what would it take to finally see women competing at the highest level in Formula 1?

The organization "More Than Equal" hopes to change that with a variety of different approaches, including more media supporting equality, cultivating female drivers from an early age, and creating female racing role models. Red Bull Racing was the only F1 team not to share a celebratory post on International Women's Day 2024. Was that the right decision? 👇 🙋♀️ Last Friday was International Women's Day. It has become customary for companies to post on their social channels highlighting how they are helping create a gender-equal world and celebrating the women in their business. 🏎 Indeed, the first-ever F1 Academy racing round (an initiative committed to driving change through increasing female participation in motorsport) coincided with the day. ♀ However, many companies chose not to post and there has also been pushback in recent years, by some on LinkedIn at least, about #iwd posts being used to virtue signal rather than as a catalyst for meaningful change. 🗓 This didn't stop Red Bull Racing from posting in 2023, but it seems the decision in 2024 has been not to show public support. 🤔 And oddly/unfortunately, when you try to click on the Red Bull Racing International Women's Day 2023 website page, sponsored by team partner CDW, you get "Well, this is embarrassing. Where did the page go?!" ❌ Of course, the decision not to post in 2024 has been taken in the middle of the ongoing situation whereby a female employee has "accused team principal Christian Horner of inappropriate and controlling behaviour." 🗣 I suspect internal discussions have centred around the want to celebrate and show public support for the women in the team whilst also not wanting to provide a catalyst for further criticism and debate. ❓ Was the decision to stay quiet the right one or should Red Bull Racing have joined their fellow teams in demonstrating their support? Yet, stepping into this space has also meant navigating challenges, from underrepresentation to proving that women belong not just on the sidelines but at the forefront of motorsport innovation, storytelling, and strategy.
