I may be biased, but 412 Food Rescue is such a great option, since you're supporting hundreds of nonprofits with your dollars. As a food rescue, we partner with food retailers to pick up their surplus food (that's still fresh and safe to eat) and deliver it to local nonprofits serving the community – safe houses, schools, housing authorities, LGTBQIA+ programs, churches, etc. Taking off the burden of where someone's next meal is coming from means they can focus on other things like caregiving, job search, addiction recovery or their mental health. A cool byproduct is also that keeping this surplus food out of the landfill mitigates harmful greenhouse gases like methane from being released into the atmosphere. I recently visited a local food bank. It is a food bank that picks up produce at a local grocery store. They used to pickup meats near expiration too. They have freezers and as an under-supplied, overburdened food bank, the need is definitely present. In the last six months the same grocery store stopped discounting meats to 50% and started only discounting them to 30%. I know for a fact this has led to greater discard of expired meat. They no longer allow the food bank to pick up near expiration meats. People who wouldn’t be able to afford those foods in the first place, imaginary profits and losses that never existed are their “reasoning” for throwing food away instead. People in need are not the enemy. People in need aren’t hoarding their money greedily and eagerly waiting at the donation doors. The (potential) merger of Albertsons and Fred Meyer terrifies me. They’re already coordinating their sales to justify “see we’re competing with each other and will keep doing so if you let us merge” What all shoppers have realized? Their prices were heavily inflated since first word of this merger to allow “sales” that don’t lose them a penny. Grocery prices are already unattainable for many and only worsening.

Let’s Talk About Hunger Beyond the Holidays Why do we often feel the call to feed the hungry only during Thanksgiving and Christmas? The truth is, hunger doesn’t take a holiday. People in our communities are in need every single day of the year. This holiday season, as you generously donate turkeys or volunteer your time, think about extending that same kindness into the rest of the year. Supporting organizations like Table to Table whose mission is to fight food insecurity year-round and reduce food waste, is a great way to make a lasting impact. 📣 We Need Your Input! 📣 Our founder and CEO, Joi Chevalier recently presented to the Travis County Public Health Commission, sharing the impactful success and future needs of our Supplemental Emergency Food Access Network (SEFAN). Since the pandemic began, SEFAN has delivered tangible results in Travis County through our Cultura Cuisine for Population Health solution, providing prepared meals that address specific community health and food access needs. The majority of the participants have difficulty accessing healthy food due to income, disability, or health issues. The participants of this program are Travis County residents with household incomes at or below 200% FPL. Participants reported feeling that they improved access to healthy and nutritious food due to the program. “The SEFAN program has been an essential and extremely successful tool for Travis County. Not only does it meet people’s immediate need for prepared food, but it connects them with staff who help them with other essential needs like housing or transportation or health care. This program provides them with delicious, healthy food and the tools to transform their lives.” – BRIGID SHEA, TRAVIS COUNTY COMMISSIONER. SEFAN’s impact has been tremendous. In the last 18 months, we delivered 309,870 meals to 8,253 people in need, partnering with 30 community-based organizations across 51 distribution sites. Joi’s presentation underscored our need for continued funding to sustain and expand this essential work and deepen our impact within the community. We are also calling for community feedback on the program and its success. Your input is invaluable as it is being accepted now by the Commissioners and with the City Council. Surprisingly, this often includes households with two working parents. As we savor the flavors of summer, let's also turn our attention to the urgent need for community-driven initiatives, support networks, and sustainable solutions to ensure that fewer people go hungry during these sunlit months.
