So many building projects say they are based on "community". That's good, but it doesn't just happen on its own or because we say we want it to happen. Saying that "I'm funny" or "I'm nice", may in fact, mean that you're actually not as funny or nice as you think. The same is the case with a business that's based around "community". Saying that we want to build a community is a good goal, but HOW are we actually doing it? What are we including, and how are we providing physical space in the building to actually make this happen? If you don't actually give the space for the things you're talking about, can it really happen? Or are you always going to be fighting uphill to make it work? At the same time, what are we doing on the operations side to help facilitate this? You can have the most perfect space, but if you run it terribly, then it will fail most likely. If we put the right things together, in the right way, with the right relationship between the parts, then people will come, and a culture and community will evolve out of that. This is based around the things that people are showing up for, because they like it. Not because you said so, because that won't work anyways. I like to think of it like a honeybee, where we don't need to say what's actually happening, but if we put things together that attract people into a facility, and curate that mixture in the right way, then operate the facility in a way that's consistent with your core values as a business and that lines up with your customers, then you'll see the community develop out of that. And that's a strategic advantage, because now you've got people who are choosing to be with you, not because you've lowballed the competition or you're the only game in town, but because you're all singing the same tune, and pulling the same direction to live the best lives that we can, together. https://lnkd.in/eqNhtHjY

standing in a ghost town during spring 2020, I had an epiphany that would reshape my approach to community development forever. during the pandemic i borrowed a friend's bike & cycled to our workspace (scared of catching covid on the train), met another human (my manager) for the first time in months, & prepared our site to open under new safety new restrictions. as ours & all other buildings stood empty and communities struggled to adapt, a challenging question struck me in the face: how can workspace truly serve ever-changing community needs? the answer hit me when I remembered a desert survival lesson: try to grasp water too aggressively, and it slips through your fingers. cup your hands gently, and you can hold what you need. that's when we realised our approach to workspace needed the same gentle patience. today, I'm thrilled to announce our groundbreaking partnership with Hackney Wick Town Hall. this is a collaboration that transforms how we think about adaptive community infrastructure. this isn't just about buildings anymore. It's about creating flexibility, where community members can become owners of change, not just beneficiaries of change. 🔑 many clever people mistake rigidity for strength, i once believed leadership meant unwavering certainty. it was only through challenging my beliefs that i learned wisdom lies in holding our convictions as gently as water in cupped palms. listening leads the lesson.
