Racing drivers want to win races and dream of championship titles. Racing teams want to win constructor’s titles and make money doing so. I’ve never quite understood why a competitive sport has 2 players who ultimately can and cannot compete with each other based on “team orders”. Why not have one driver each and race other teams on track wholeheartedly? A driver can embody the whole team of engineers and staff on track. But as we saw yesterday, the instinctive nature of a driver to race to win and take any opportunity to do so was smothered by team orders and caused a conflict of interest within the whole team. Who deserved to win? Oscar was in the lead The pit stop gave Llando the advantage But then Oscar wasn’t quick enough and Llando theoretically would have passed Oscar anyway (if allowed to race) But to safeguard constructor points for revenue jeopardised championship points for the leading driver. Llando did the morally just thing, but would someone chasing a championship be justified in ignoring team orders? A maiden win for Oscar - congrats and a 1-2 ultimately for McLaren…but a shame not to have seen a bit more “racing”. But, F1 is big business and money talks which is what matters first and foremost.
