We’re seeing double! 😵💫💧💧 The River Stiffkey, a chalk stream in Norfolk, UK, will become the world’s first to have its own AI technology digital twin. A collaboration between Microsoft, Anglian Water Services, and Avanade is building a digital replica of the Stiffkey. Only 14% of rivers have good ecological health in the UK. The river is one of 300 chalk streams in the world, so we must be able to keep them healthy. One ambition is to unite multiple data sources in a "connected stack" to help digitally model a spatial river catchment map. Based on the data, simulations will then be run using AI. Pretty much all of the chalk streams in the world are in the UK, most in the south of England (not all...). Like all rivers they are under threat. But technology is helping us to find solutions to the challenges faced by these incredible fragile rivers and the ecosystems they support. Ofwat and the water companies in the UK are not exactly darlings of the press right now, which feeds into public consciousness, but it's only fair to say that there are incredible investments being made into new technologies, infrastructure, and forward thinking solutions, that fly under the public radar.
