🌍 Exciting Collaboration Announcement! 🌍 ThinkPlace is thrilled to be working alongside the Wellcome Trust on a groundbreaking initiative to reshape how we tackle infectious diseases. Together, we are building an online Community of Practice (CoP) that brings together civil society organisations (CSOs) from India, Kenya, South Africa, Thailand, and surrounding regions to shape Wellcome's infectious disease policy and research strategies. 🤝🌱 Our mission? To foster a collaborative, community-led environment that amplifies the voices of those most affected by infectious diseases. This project is about more than just data—it’s about creating a platform where community insights drive policy and solutions, helping us take a more collaborative, community-driven approach to global health challenges. 🌍 From our discussions so far, we’ve uncovered some key insights and recommendations: 💪 Trust flourishes when communities are engaged at every stage of the process —design, implementation, and beyond. 🧠 Addressing health infrastructure and public perceptions is essential for fostering treatment-seeking behaviour. 🎤 Involving community voices from the start ensures that solutions are relevant, trusted, and impactful. 👥 Prioritising the most vulnerable groups helps to reduce health inequities and ensures interventions reach those who need them most. We’re excited to be part of a project that strengthens community engagement, builds meaningful partnerships, and prioritises vulnerable communities in Wellcome’s mission to combat infectious diseases. 🌟 Interested in learning more or discussing insights around community engagement and global health? The "face" of #pandemic risk is changing. A new World Health Organization report outlines key drivers of pandemic risk and offers a roadmap for strengthening our defenses, citing the #AvianInfluenza H5N1 and its spillover to humans and the new strain of #mpox in Central Africa as the most recent "signals of concern." As the authors write, the report is a “call to action for global leaders, policy-makers, health professionals, and communities to build a safer, more resilient future.” 👉 https://lnkd.in/dHZ4JaGK

The impact of the #COVID19 #pandemic has certainly imbued an increased sense of awareness around potential future pandemics. The World Health Organization has “determined that the upsurge of #mpox in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and a growing number of countries in Africa constitutes a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) under the International Health Regulations (2005) (IHR).” In today’s #digitally dominated world. A key element for dealing with any emergency has to be in the information space. Having trusted sources and making sure their message is disseminated is now a critical element of any emergency response. How does your Organization deal with the information element in modern emergencies? #smem https://lnkd.in/gX-gsXmE

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus just announced that Clade I mpox circulating in the DRC and neighboring states is a PHEIC. His decision is historic. It is the first time that both a regional and global health emergency have been declared. (Just this week, for the first time, the Africa CDC declared mpox a Public Health Emergency of Continental Security. It's the first PHECS ever declared. Today's decision is the World Health Organization's first PHEIC since the IHR amendments of May 2024. As a member of the IHR Review Committee, I believe the most vital amendment was the inclusion of equity as a core principle of the IHR. While the 2024 amendments don't come into effect until 2025, it is vital for WHO & the world to base this response -- from end to end -- based on equity. The world has largely ignored the Clade I mpox outbreak in the DRC and its neighbors. There is now a vital need to ensure a surge of funding and action based on the principle of equity. That will require millions of vaccine doses, as well as major investments in diagnostics, laboratories, surveillance, and health communication. What's most important is that this outbreak has the potential for spread not only across the African continent, but also globally. If cases were to spillover to Europe, mpox would likely spread rapidly throughout the world. Given efficient sexual and household transmission, there is pandemic potential. An effective coordinated response based on equity and solidarity would be in the security interests not only of African countries, but also worldwide, including Europe and the United States. Finally, given the simultaneous operation of a regional and global emergency, the need for close partnership and coordination with African leaders and the Africa CDC is essential. This is a moment of empowerment for Africa and the value of global solidarity https://lnkd.in/gxVd3QqG https://lnkd.in/e5Em6Yyd

"The CBS system detected 9 alerts of outbreak-prone diseases (OPDs) within a year—compared to zero alerts over the previous three years by traditional district health services"
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗳 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘁 𝘇𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀? In the midst of the Anglophone Crisis in Cameroon, where health systems were crippled by conflict, a groundbreaking initiative emerged. A study by Alain Metuge, Lundi-Anne Omam, Elizabeth Jarman, and Esther Omam Njomo showcases how community-based surveillance (CBS) became a beacon of hope in Ekondo-Titi. Their efforts, supported by UNICEF, demonstrate the transformative potential of empowering local communities to safeguard public health. 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘉𝘚 𝘴𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮 𝘥𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘥 9 𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘣𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘬-𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦𝘴 (𝘖𝘗𝘋𝘴) 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯 𝘢 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳—𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘻𝘦𝘳𝘰 𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘴 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴 𝘣𝘺 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘵 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩 𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘴. This initiative not only identified measles, cholera, and even a monkeypox outbreak but also ensured timely responses with an average lag of just two days. As the authors assert: "In the absence of functional health systems, community-led surveillance fills critical gaps, enabling rapid detection and response in remote and insecure areas." This initiative underscores the importance of community engagement. Local health workers, often displaced themselves, served as vigilant monitors, bridging the gap between crisis-stricken populations and health authorities. The project’s rapid-response mobile health team proved indispensable, enabling early identification, investigation, and containment of outbreaks. This success story from Cameroon offers a compelling blueprint for deploying CBS systems globally, especially in fragile settings. As Metuge and colleagues emphasize: "CBS is not just surveillance—it’s a lifeline for communities in distress." Let’s champion such innovative solutions to build resilient health systems.
