Well, I finished this application yesterday, I'd estimate it took me 30+ hours in total. To answer my own questions. Was it worth it? most definitely, even if it goes nowhere it's been good to reflect on the skills I've gained throughout my career and to then actually write them down. It will certainly help me in future applications. Did I put in too much effort? probably, but that's just me, if I'm going to do something I may as well put my all into it. I think the main effort was not so much writing down all my experiences, skills gained and examples of how I've applied those to previous roles, it was more a case of trying to put that all forward in a coherent form without being too verbose. I managed to trim it all down to, on average, 250 words for each of the 21 responses.

Am I putting in too much effort? I'm currently in the process of applying for a job that looks more than interesting and I know I can do. The application process is via an online form and I want to make sure I get it right. I've got to the section where I need to show how I meet the essential requirements and there are 21 requirements with space for 1000 words in each. I'm on the 3rd of the 21 and so far I've spent 15 odd hours crafting my 3 responses. Is this normal, is it worth it?
