Does the perfect gift exist? We think it does! Here are four questions to keep in mind when looking for the perfect gift? Is it wanted by the recipient? Is it congruent with your values? Is it right-sized to the occasion? Is it relevant to the occasion? Reflecting on these questions can help relieve the anxiety we know gift givers experience, regardless of whether they are engaged in 1 to 1 gifting in a personal capacity or 1 to 1,001 gifting in a business setting. We have a hunch that what makes a gift perfect is simply a gift, or better yet, a choice of gifts that are wanted by the recipient, reflect the values of the gift giver, and are right-sized and relevant to the occasion. The heart of gifting A couple of years ago, my partner made a compartment where I could hang my earrings. I will never forget that gift; it touched me immensely. Why? Firstly, I love earrings and now I can see them hanging on my wall like a piece of art. Secondly, I am less likely to lose my earrings. Thirdly, she took her time and made it by hand. And lastly, I felt she knew me so well. She knew that my earrings meant so much to me and I kept losing them. I felt deeply connected in that moment. I feel that this is what gifting should be about. It is not about the cost or about giving because one feels obliged. It is about the connection that happens. To do gifting well we must understand people’s needs and desires. But most of all, it is about the intention. When we put a bit of heart into our process, it can’t go wrong. When gifting is done this way, the receiver feels that you were really thinking of them and so they feel a sense of connection and belonging. In turn, the giver feels that they have done a great job; they feel accomplished and appreciated. Of course, if you put no heart into it, the outcome could be a sense of disconnection, 'does this person even know me'? Who would have ever thought gifting could do so much? The last few years I have become quite slack at gift giving as I have prioritised my workload. I find it very frustrating. I remember how good it felt to put time into choosing a gift and, more than anything, I remember how it made people feel. I need to allow more time, slow down and put more heart into the process. At Koh Living, we have considered that not everyone has a lot of time on their hands. Therefore, when we create our gifts, we create them from the heart. As the creative product director, I have always wanted people to feel loved when they receive our gifts. I consider every detail, from the artwork chosen; to the story behind it; to the card we use to print on; to the ink; and to the message that goes inside. 3 things to remember about your gifting: 1/ When you give someone a gift, what do you hope to see? Easy… you hope to see them use it! You’ve been given gifts. The best way to say thank you is to use them in service of others. 2/ The area of your gifting is dangerous. The fact that you are gifted means that you have the ability to wing outcomes that other people work for. Guard against this. It creates complacency and represents poor stewardship. 3/ Good gifts always reveal something about the character and nature of the giver. It’s so powerful to acknowledge what your gifting reveals to you about the one that made you.
