You'll see me nodding along and smiling here as David shares his first experience in a management role. It resonated deeply. I've been that manager too. I've coached those managers since. It frustrates me that this is still a perennial feature of most workplaces; managers being promoted without access to the relevant coaching and training to develop the core behaviours that will enable them and their team to flourish. Most operate on guesswork. Our teams deserve better. These managers deserve better. This is one of the reasons I was drawn to use Performance Climate System (PCS) in my practice as a facilitator and coach. It offers an evidence-led, data rich assessment of team climate - one of the best predictors or leadership effectiveness and high performing teams. And - one of my dealbreakers - it has EXTREMELY high utility. Leadership isn’t a dark art, it’s a process, which anyone can learn. But that process needs to be guided by relevant, high quality data to make it easy to take action. Trust isn't just a word; it's the cornerstone of effective leadership. We highlighted an essential contrast in our podcast episode: the difference between "prove me wrong" and "prove me right" attitudes in leadership. Many leaders operate under the assumption that trust must be earned, placing employees in a constant state of proving themselves. But imagine the shift in dynamics when a leader starts from a place of trust, saying, "I trust you; prove me right." This approach not only uplifts but also empowers. It fosters a culture where mistakes are part of growth, not failures to be penalized. Sure, there might be instances where adjustments are needed, but the primary stance is one of confidence and support. Are you building a culture of trust or skepticism? I was recently listening to the latest Andy Stanley Leadership Podcast and it featured another leader I love to follow, Stephen Covey! He discusses his new book, Trust and Inspire. Here are some other things that stood out to me in the podcast: - Leadership styles must evolve with the times. - Trust and Inspire isn't just a slight adjustment—it's a fundamental shift in how we view and engage with our teams. - As leaders, we have a responsibility to model the behaviors we expect, trust our teams, and inspire them to reach their full potential.
