According to recent reports, the shortage of oncologists has hit critical levels, leaving many cancer patients in rural areas stranded without the specialized care they desperately need. This insightful conversation, hosted on Oncology News Central's Peer-spective podcast between Harsha Vyas, MD, and Robert A. Figlin, MD, dives into the intricacies of why this oncology shortage exists, why it affects rural populations the most, and what possible steps can be taken to address this problem. At We Are Here, our team is dedicated to delivering comprehensive cancer resources directly to the doorsteps of those most affected by this shortage. From mental health resources to educational materials and support networks, we're working tirelessly to ensure that no patient is left behind. An analysis of #gynecologiccancer information on social media revealed that most of it is of poor educational quality. Information on #socialmedia offers community, and it normalizes a lot of symptoms patients might be experiencing. However, one should be cautious about the available information. If a patient reads or hears something they haven’t been told already by their provider, they should confirm said information with their physician. There is potential value for a patient who might want to hear an encouraging or inspiring story about their particular cancer via social media although personal stories may also induce anxiety with respect to patients sharing their condition (e.g., waiting for the results from a diagnostic scan). Ultimately, cancer can be isolating and the primary issue is to ensure that patients feel comfortable sharing their thoughts with clinicians. Since a lot of cancer-related comments and questions are raised on social media, it is important to be aware that there are many fallacies about cancer care and treatments. Accordingly, clinicians should be able to have an open dialogue with patients so they feel their concerns are being heard and accurately conveyed. Hopefully, patients will be subsequently guided toward formalized communities with appropriate information to further assist them with understanding their cancer care. https://lnkd.in/gzYxztBf #cancerresearch

Caregivers shoulder an enormous load - from having to coordinate and arrange logistics to feeling like they bear all responsibility to overwhelming anxiety and fatigue - all while putting on a brave front for their loved one. This study shows the very real, sobering impact a cancer diagnosis has on patients' spouses. I've seen innovative experiences and resources developed to support the partners of cancer patients. Take, for instance, the incredibly powerful retreats Lillie Shockney hosts for metastatic patients and their partners. But what about those families who don't have access or don't have the time, energy, or capacity to leverage supportive resources? How can we develop practical solutions to meet caregivers where they are and at the right time? To me, this is an opportunity for virtual, on-demand resources to lend significant value. What other innovative solutions have you seen? https://lnkd.in/ex-M5whc

Coming back from #ASCO2024, I’m both optimistic and overwhelmed by the new treatment possibilities and the bright future for cancer patients. However, a lingering question remains: why is so little attention given to the patient? Not just the tumor or the biomarker, but the actual patients themselves. Who are they? What’s important to them? What barriers and challenges do they face? At Leal Health, we are committed to driving the industry towards true patient-centricity by understanding the entire patient journey. We focus on the patient’s needs, preferences, and obstacles, ensuring that they are at the center of every decision. I am thrilled to share that we published two abstracts at #ASCO2024, highlighting the benefits of digital health in bridging gaps in cancer care.
