⁉️Do you know what ‘sexting’ is? 🤯 😱I was recently talking with some teens about cyberbullying and how frequently it occurs. Unbeknownst to parents, one of the more frequent forms of cyberbullying harassment is ‘sexting,’ defined as, “the sending of sexually suggestive or explicit messages in text, image or video form.” 😨Amongst teens it’s also called, ‘sexts, noodles, or nudes.’ As it pertains to cyberbullying, it’s typically shared ‘without consent with the intent to humiliate.’ Not only is this behavior harmful, it’s illegal in many states. ⁉️Did you also know that, ‘sextortion,’ another form of cyberbullying (where someone online threatens to send a sexual image or video of you to other people if you don’t pay them or provide more sexual content), is on the rise? 😱 Did that grab your attention? It should! Cyberbullying is nothing to mess around with! 📕Welcome to, ‘Teenage Turmoil: Tackling Cyberbullying Frenemies To Foster Psychological Safety, Part 3,’ where I outline what parents can do to protect their teens.. Today is #WorldAutismDay, and we would like to take a moment to highlight three of our organizations that focus on this condition. Some will tell you that it is only a recent phenomenon, but that isn't true. The public acceptance of Autism and the embrace of people on the spectrum is growing, as well it should. Autism Ontario has been operating for fifty years, offering support to families of autistic individuals, those individuals themselves, and funds for research of causes and treatments. They also help to coordinate events and services for Autistic people. They recently signed on to Volunteer Peterborough, so we're welcoming them with open arms. We also have Autism Homebase, which is a social hub for Autistic folks and their families and caregivers. This barrier-free club has events where nobody has to worry about suppressing themselves. Tics, stimming and outbursts are welcome; it's opportunity to be one's self in an accepting environment. We'd also like to give a shout out to our friends at Heads Up for Inclusion, who advocate in the schools for friendships between disabled students and their peers. It's a fact that kids with Autism can flourish with mainstream friends. The Amigos program facilitates these friendships through in-school activities and outside adventures. The Community Amigos do the same for young adults who have left the school system, but will still benefit from friendship. In the past, those on the Autistic spectrum ranged from the "neighbourhood's odd duck" to the institutionalized relation of whom nobody spoke. And that is tragic. Nobody deserves that "othering". The more we can introduce the world to the Autistic, the better they can make the world.
