Today’s class of Beyond the Barbed Wire talked about the crossroads of life and how our values determine the path we take when we come to life’s crossroads. “I am at a crossroads right now. It’s literally life and death for me,” one of the men shared. “I know what I need to do, and about 85 percent of the time, I make the right decision. But I have to do it 100 percent of the time or I’m afraid I’m going to lose my life.” Many of the men shared their most vulnerable thoughts tonight. Another man shared: “My crossroads is one I face often. I try hard to be there for others when they are down. But when I am down, I don’t feel like I can share with anyone because I’m supposed to be there for others. Sometimes I wonder if I should keep going … I do keep going. But, I have those thoughts every few weeks and it’s my crossroads.” We continued to speak of how values help us make hard decisions when we stand at hard crossroads. “This lesson really made me think,” another man shared. “It made me realize the crossroads I am standing at and I want to choose the right path. I have to choose the right path, even if it’s hard.” The men in prison are men. They are humans, just like you and I. Their stories are both heartbreaking and powerful when you get to know the backgrounds that led to their “today.” Many have committed crimes that have forever impacted the lives of others … and they cannot undo what has been done. Some realize this truth and desire greatly to live out the rest of their lives doing all the good they can … in the ways they can … even if it’s never outside the gates of a prison. Some of these men will be released and they will return to their communities. They desire to succeed and also understand the barriers and fear being a failure. Next week we will complete the last class and f this cohort and then the week after we will celebrate with a graduation ceremony and hot meal. I am excited to begin the next cohort with Book #2 - Beyond the Barbed Wire: Cultivating Character that Overcomes.
