Celebrating Success in Industrial Coatings Apprenticeships The Power of Apprenticeships Jack Tighe Ltd. has set a new standard in the coatings industry with the successful completion of the first Industrial Coatings Applicator Apprenticeship (ICAA). In August 2020, seven apprentices passed their End Point Assessment with distinction, showcasing the effectiveness of this innovative training program. Meeting Industry Needs The coatings industry is grappling with an aging workforce, and Jack Tighe Ltd. is no exception. By implementing the ICAA, the company has taken proactive steps to address this challenge. The apprenticeship program not only provides essential skills and qualifications but also aligns with the company's long-term strategic goals. The apprentices have gained hands-on experience and a deep understanding of industry best practices. Looking Ahead The success of the first cohort has paved the way for the future. Jack Tighe Ltd. is expanding the program, with new apprentices set to start soon. This commitment to workforce development ensures that the company remains at the forefront of the industry. As TICA-ACAD oversee the Alliance Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) for Thermal Insulation we have been able to closely analyse the current workforce age profile and compare this to what is happening in the wider construction industry. The long and short of it is, that like with the wider construction industry, Thermal Insulation also has an ageing workforce; 30% of carded insulators will reach retirement age in the next 10-15 years. As the Trade Association representing the Thermal Insulation industry, it has been crucial for us to proactively try to remedy this skills gap. The good news - we have more than doubled apprenticeship numbers in the last 3 years and already forecast that we will more than replace those leaving the industry through retirement over the next 10-15 years. This is a very different picture to many other trades experiencing the same issues… The bad news - there’s still so much more we can do!! I bang on about this all the time but if I asked any Thermal Insulation contractor what their biggest challenge is, without missing a beat they would say “skilled labour. I have more work than people to fulfil it!”. Which in some respects is a nice problem to have, but nevertheless is still a problem. So yes, replacing the ageing workforce, we’ve got it covered! But GROWING the current and future workforce is where we need a call to action from ALL contractors (members and none-members alike) if they are to really meet demand. What the infographic here is trying to highlight is growing the workforce to the level needed is completely within the realms of possibility. If every contractor took just ONE (or one more) apprentice for the next 3-5 years this would completely change the trajectory and go a really long way to future proofing the industry. Our partner, Skill Builders Solutions Solutions, is passionate about building strong careers in the skilled trades for people from all walks of life. As a non-profit organization, their mission is to break down barriers and open doors, ensuring that individuals have access to fulfilling career options, regardless of background or previous experience. At South Bay Correctional Inst Facility, they are piloting a solar technician pre-apprenticeship program that will lead directly into a sponsored apprenticeship program with employment upon participants’ release. Their construction craft laborer program is breaking barriers by offering virtual, self-paced classes and comprehensive wraparound supports. When an apprentice whose primary language is Spanish struggled to complete his classwork in English, they provided him with an English tutor and English language classes as well as access to a bilingual instructor and a Spanish book. Buddy System: Pair apprentices with experienced team members. A go-to person can make all the difference in easing them into their new role. 3. Regular Check-ins: Schedule frequent check-ins to address any concerns or questions. Show them that their well-being is a top priority! 4️. Clear Safety Guidelines: Provide easy-to-understand, jargon-free safety materials. Keep them accessible, so they always have the info they need at their fingertips. 5️.
