🤔 LinkedIn relevant question that activates the algorithm and drives attention to this post? 🤯 📣 Ok on 3rd July I'm doing a panel event with Disegno at Rimadesio in London alongside Tigris L. "Through the Fun House Mirror" on the possibility of #design and #change - "While design often reflects existing paradigms, the talk will explore forms of practice that aim to be transformative, foregrounding new aesthetics, ideas and social values. Rather than meet the needs of the status quo, can design help to shape new ways of living, or foreground alternative perspectives." Thanks Oli Stratford for the invite, genuinely don't know what I'm going to talk about which is always makes for a super fun and impromptu chat.

A few weeks ago I had an opportunity to attend the Readymag 's online conference, and it was such an inspiring experience! Featuring an international panel of design experts, the discussions explored the balance between ethics, creativity, and business goals—crucial topics for the contemporary design industry. As a dedicated note-taker ✍, I wanted to share some key insights that stood out to me 🤓. Cat How of How&How spoke about the importance of female leadership in the design industry. Her thoughts on mentorship, trust-building, and fostering collaboration struck a chord with me, especially as someone navigating the evolving dynamics of freelancing and AI in creative work. Samar Maakaroun now with Pentagram, shared beautiful concepts like "play and reveal." I loved how she emphasized the importance of playfulness in design while staying true to one’s vision, even under client pressures. Her perspective on using cultural sensitivity and creative limitations as opportunities was profoundly insightful and highlighted innovative approaches to design challenges. Verònica Fuerte of Heystudio brought a playful energy to the conversation, reminding us to embrace randomness and celebrate the beauty of mistakes. Her focus on creating timeless, authentic brands over chasing fleeting trends was truly inspiring, emphasizing the importance of longevity and meaning in design. The conference reminded me of the importance of staying true to my creative identity while connecting with others in meaningful ways. I highly recommend Samar’s interview Designing at the Junction of Two Worlds for further inspiration—it’s a fantastic read! Readymag's dedication to fostering meaningful conversations in design is truly admirable, offering a platform that inspires creativity, drives innovation, and encourages collaboration across the design community. Thank you, Readymag and Alexandra Velasco, for creating such a vibrant platform for designers to connect and grow! 😊 #Readymag #DesignConference #Creativity #Innovation #femaleleadership

Discover the transformative insights of Kelvin Soh from DDMMYY Studio as he shares his journey from #traditional design practices to embracing the invisible aspects of design at The Design Conference 2024. In this compelling talk, Kelvin delves into the concept of “#refocusing,” a therapeutic method introduced by his friend Diane, which he successfully adapted to his design process. Kelvin illustrates how active #listening and clean #language can unlock breakthrough moments in client meetings, leading to unexpected yet impactful solutions. He recounts a pivotal experience where changing a single element based on client feedback turned a rejected project into an approved success. Moving beyond conventional design approaches, Kelvin explores the importance of considering the “things around the thing,” the unseen forces that shape the final outcome. He reflects on his evolution from #experimental design in the early 2000s to a more #holistic practice that values visible and invisible elements. Kelvin’s talk is rich with anecdotes, including his work on campaigns for Klim Type Foundry and innovative branding projects like “Boring Oat Milk.” Each project underscores his belief in the power of truth, differentiation, and empathy in creating meaningful design. Join Kelvin Soh in this insightful lecture and learn how to refocus your design approach for greater impact. The Design Conference is a wonderfully #confronting experience for creatives. I had the privilege of being one of the speakers at 2024 Aiga Design Conference, AIGA Design, where we tackled some of the most pressing issues shaping the future of design today. One of the key themes was around margins and marginality, emphasizing the importance of giving space to underrepresented voices, non-Western design histories, and design practices that live outside the mainstream. We also explored inclusivity and accessibility, addressing the need to create design systems that work for everyone, including neurodivergent individuals, differently-abled persons, and historically excluded communities. Another exciting theme was community-centered and co-creation design, where we discussed how involving communities in the design process leads to more relevant and empowering outcomes. Decolonizing design and challenging traditional Eurocentric conventions was a recurring topic, pushing us all to think about how to create a truly global and inclusive design practice. The discussions around design as a tool for social change were particularly inspiring, highlighting how design can amplify marginalized voices, tackle systemic inequalities, and drive societal progress. The focus on cultural representation, narrative storytelling, and technological innovation showcased how we can preserve cultural identities and histories through design, while also addressing the ethical implications of our work in the digital era. Overall, it was an inspiring event that reminded me of the critical role design can play in shaping a more inclusive, equitable, and impactful future for all. Thank you again all for connecting! #DesignForChange #InclusiveDesign #DecolonizingDesign #CommunityDesign #SocialImpact #CulturalRepresentation

Starting off this week feeling energized after attending Exploring Design Methods, a talk series hosted by IDSA Boston and MIT AgeLab, at the Boston Public Library this weekend! It was great to learn from design and industry leaders Sheng-Hung Lee, Satu Miettinen (She/Her), Jen Ashman, and Mari Suoheimo. ✨ A few quick takeaways✨ 👁️ Learn through observation across the process👂 Observing users during testing and in their adoption of new frameworks offers insight into their mental models, needs, and values. 🚀 Design evolves at multiple levels 🌍 When asking 'what is sellable' in a design context, consider how this impacts processes and outcomes, whether it's an emphasis on decolonization, the adoption of new tools/skills, or a move towards strategic design. 🏠 Play and story foster place and identity 💗 When designing place-based interventions, creating spaces that offer refuge, reflect history, and engage in dialogue with modern elements nurtures culture and conversation. 🐢 Design is not always a sprint 🐇 Solving complex, systemic problems requires careful consideration of the needs of all involved. Many thanks to the organizers and to all who shared their perspectives! #design #IDSABoston #BostonPublicLibrary #designmethods #empathy #servicedesign #creativity
