For those who know me as the 'coding and tech' person, I’m branching out to share more about my own professional journey, lessons learned, and insights I’ve picked up along the way. It’s going to be less about code and more about context—the whys, the hows, and the what-nexts. So, here’s to starting conversations and sharing more of the journey. Let’s connect beyond the screens and see where this goes! #CareerDevelopment #TechToHuman #LinkedInCommunity

Let me talk about Mattering. I recently had a conversation with a former colleague who's company's core values include making sure everyone feels they belong. This is a great value, no doubt about it. When we feel we belong, we feel like we are part of the team instead of an outsider. I remember the first time I had the distinct feeling of belonging: early in my career, working as a developer on a subsystem of the Unix kernel, I felt that, despite my leadership role on my subsystem, that I couldn't hang with senior engineers on the all-star team - those working on virtual memory (I know, kids. Look it up.) That all changed at lunch one day in the Bell Labs auditorium when they invited me to join their lunch table. I belonged. But mattering is a whole different level. When you matter, you know you won't just be invited to the lunch table, but that you will be missed when you don't show up the next day. And more than that, what makes it so important from a business perspective, mattering emphasizes what you contribute. Everyone should know how they are important to the company, and contributing to its bottom line. If you haven't had this disconnect in your career, let me tell you, its real. People come to work and drag through the day because they can't put two and two together about how some menial task matters to the company. (And, the flip side, if it doesn't matter to the company, it shouldn't be done.) You may think that mattering means more to startups and small companies, but that's not the way I view it. To make a career fulfilling, you must focus on the team around you to whom you can possibly matter. When I worked at Oracle, that meant focusing on my small product. As I moved up to Director, it meant focusing on how my roll added value to our middleware division. Read more about Mattering on my blog, https://lnkd.in/eH_vhDaH. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Mattering in the comments below.

Seen an incredible influx of folks to 🦋 #Bluesky over the past few weeks - suddenly my feed there reminds me of happier #ScienceTwitter times. If you'd like to join the conversation there, check out the starter packs being curated by Stephen Turner - it's a great way to get kickstarted, and there's even a #Nextflow pack: https://lnkd.in/dscR4WCb If that's not enough, Edmund Miller is also curating a similar #Nextflow list at https://lnkd.in/d6ccf8fV - plenty to fill those feeds! 🎉
