Recognise that the body and mind undergo substantial changes, and that healing takes time. Be gentle with yourself and practice patience. Embrace healthy self-care habits, seek support networks, and communicate openly with your employer about your needs. Raising awareness in the workplace can be crucial for both expectant mothers and those returning from maternity leave. By openly discussing the challenges that women may face during the perinatal period, workplaces and the wider community can create a more supportive environment for new mothers. So, what can your organisation do to raise awareness of maternal health in the workplace? Deborah Leveroy PhD shares 6 tips below: 👉 If you have an employee network, bring a speaker in to talk about the subject or ask an employee to share their experience in a blog. 👉 When women are preparing for maternity leave, ensure you give them sign-posting about perinatal mental health services. 👉 Offer ‘keeping in touch days’ during their maternity leave to keep them connected with the working world. 👉 When planning a return to work after maternity, provide women with sign-posting to workplace resources and benefits (such as an Employee Assistance Programme, health insurance, or an employee network). 👉 Consider offering a ‘transition buddy’, a workplace mentor that can support the transition back to work. 👉 For those experiencing complex or severe mental health challenges, consider what adjustments can be put in place. For example, enabling hybrid/remote working may help the person to manage childcare arrangements, or review job responsibilities to reduce more stressful tasks – such as reducing phone calls or customer-facing work. My journey began with the misconception that postpartum recovery is a quick six-week process. However, the truth is far more nuanced—physical, mental, and emotional healing can extend well beyond this timeframe. In an industry where the demands are as tough as the terrain, ensuring personal safety while managing pregnancy and postpartum challenges is paramount. Self-care isn’t a luxury but a necessity; finding moments to recharge amidst the demands is crucial. Personally, managing sleep deprivation has been a significant hurdle, but aligning my routine with my baby's has improved my sleep pattern, despite frequent nighttime interruptions.   Organizational policies like exemptions from night shifts and underground work during pregnancy and a year after delivery have enabled more flexibility at work. Such policies are not mere conveniences but vital safeguards that support our safety and health. Advocating for these measures is pivotal in ensuring a secure and supportive environment for all mothers in the industry. Embracing motherhood in the extractive industry is a journey of resilience and adaptation. By prioritizing health and safety, we not only empower ourselves but also enhance productivity.
