The conference season has kicked off. Many people are travelling to different places. Unfortunately, most of this will happen by plane, as discovering how to get somewhere by train can be challenging. Recently, I heard of a website called "The Man in Seat 61". It is an old-fashioned blog about train travel in Europe. Believe it or not, the writer has found ways to travel almost everywhere by train. Have a look at the website: https://lnkd.in/dVCUt9jb #traintravel #esg #cee #sustainabletravel #sustainabletransport #esggoals

It's surprising that Carbon Monoxide Poisoning is still claiming many lives, and a large proportion of these incidents are preventable. How could you prevent and mitigate risk as an individual or company? It could be as simple as carrying or installing a CO detector costing as little as £20, with a lifespan of four to ten years. #CarbonMonoxide #CarbonMonoxidePoisoning #Risk #Prevent #SaferTourismFoundation
CO poisoning still claims lives. As many as 30,000 a year globally. And most of those deaths are preventable. This summer, Safer Tourism Foundation is honoured to be supporting the Foley family in their efforts to raise awareness about the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning with their #PackSafeAppeal. Hudson Foley passed away while travelling in Ecuador just one year ago - tragically, a £20 portable carbon monoxide alarm could have saved his life. Thank you Charity Today for reporting this important story. #travelnews #travelsafe #cosafety #gassafety

Kony 2012 was a valuable lesson on the dangerous effects of charitable and voluntourism on Uganda, and more generally in Africa, displaying the ugliness of white savior tourism and how many charities and volunteers forget to listen. This begs the question: is tourism beneficial? The answer is yes, if travelers are able to work on truly making a difference by learning and understanding the destination they are visiting and to, above all, be respectful. Revisit the Kony 2012 campaign with us and understand how steps we can take to communicate and travel more responsibly in 2024. #kony2012 #voluntourism #sustainabletravel

Charity tourism is a growing trend where travelers combine their love for exploration with a desire to give back to the communities they visit. This form of tourism goes beyond the traditional experiences of sightseeing and leisure; it involves participating in meaningful projects that aim to improve the lives of local people and support sustainable development. The sentimental feelings associated with charity tourism are profound and multifaceted, encompassing a blend of empathy, fulfillment, and connection. Travelers are often exposed to the challenges and hardships faced by local communities, such as poverty, lack of access to education and healthcare, and environmental issues. This firsthand experience can be eye-opening and transformative, helping tourists to understand the complexities of these issues on a personal level. The act of working alongside local people, sharing stories, and witnessing their resilience often leads to a heightened sense of compassion and a desire to advocate for positive change. ✈ 🚢 The UK market for travel, from Office of National Statistics data, represents $76.7 billion spent in 2022 alone. And by the end of 2024, an optimistic projection for outbound tourism would reach 86.9 million trips! And with the European Green Deal pushing for a carbon-neutral continent by 2050, the travel industry is definitely going to need to do its part as it plays a massive part in shaping the planet’s sustainability agenda. Through a blend of innovation and responsibility, the steadily growing industry is striving to minimize its environmental footprint and reimagine how it operates, from embracing fuel-efficient transportation options to adopting eco-friendly practices in accommodations. 🌿 We, at Communities for Nature, want to help “traveling for good” become even easier for people around the world by partnering with Charitable Travel, a unique social enterprise that goes above and beyond the traditional travel agency business model. They focus on purpose over profit, donating surplus profit from all sales to charity; with 5% of the holiday price to the charity of choice. 🏖 🌍 Learn more about our partner Charitable Travel and how you can include Communities for Nature in planning your holiday! https://lnkd.in/gnTagjBj

“Some travel is more a nuisance than a hardship, but travel is always a mental challenge, and even at its most difficult, travel can be an enlightenment.” ~ Paul Theroux “Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.” ~ Ibn Battuta “Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations.” ~ Anonymous “True adventure begins when everything goes wrong.” ~ Yvon Chouinard Earlier this week, I had family travelling from Kingston, Ontario to Victoria B.C. When I checked to see if they had got to their destination … I got this response. They left Kingston at 7 am, 1 Uber, 4 Trains, 1 Plane, 1 Bus and 1 Ferry, they had indeed landed in Victoria. All was well, but it got me thinking and inspired for this week’s blog. We take so much for granted, we have expectations, and we have the freedom to have expectations. How much of our freedom is expectation? Do we only think within our own world? Are we grateful for our freedom? Do we give thought to the bigger world? Do we see others? Do we know their stories? Are they free to go home? Being aware of self encourages us to see others and to practice gratitude, compassion, and empathy. An inconvenience we might experience, put into the context of our freedom, is a guiding means of our expectations and our compassion for self and others. On days when I feel small and insignificant, I can practice compassion and gratitude and add hope for a gentler world! “Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness. We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.” ~ Martin Luther King, Jr. . . . This week's blog has been posted. Please feel free to share it.
