In my recent travels, I've noticed a surprising number of people overlook the importance of game room payout percentages and redemption markups. These factors directly impact revenue and the bottom line, yet they often don't get the attention they deserve. While arcades may not be the main attraction at family entertainment centers (FECs), they are typically a significant revenue source. It's common to focus on areas of comfort and knowledge, but that isn't always the best strategy for your bottom line. For example, if your arcade generates 50% of your revenue and your snack bar 15%, spending most of your time on food costs might not be the most effective use of your efforts. Instead, consider the financial impact of increasing your game room revenue by 10% versus saving a few cents on French fries. Read the full post for more. 

The glow of the screens drew you in like a moth to the flames. The sounds of blips, bloops, and bangs acted like a Pied Piper leading to the glorious, arcade! Welcome to our continuing series on my reflections of the retail industry. While an arcade didn't sell anything, other than mastery over a video game, they were a vital part of most malls back in the 80's and 90's. My arcade of choice was in the Food Court of my mall. It was handy that I worked in the mall as I would head there on my breaks. My quarters were dropped. The sound of the plop was the cue that a magical moment was about to happen. Games like Dragon's Lair, WWF Wrestlefest and the Star Wars Arcade Game were ones that drew me in and took a lot of my quarters. The arcade was a place to show your mastery. Audiences would form around those that showed their skills. The clerk would walk the aisles giving out change to those that needed it and troubleshooting any games that were not functioning. He did his best with the teens that crammed the space. Sadly, as home video games became more advanced, the arcade lost relevance as a mall shop. Now you can find retro arcades, some tied to bars and others tied to restaurants. Marketed to those who carry strong memories of arcades and their allure and power. Did you have a favourite arcade?
