This alarming stat shared by the CDC is due to a combination of factors, such as: 🚦 Inexperience: Teens may misjudge dangerous situations or lack the skills to respond to emergencies. 📱 Distractions: Texting, using apps, or even talking to passengers while driving increases crash risks. 🚗 Risky Behaviors: Speeding and failure to wear seat belts are major contributors. As parents and community members, we can reduce these risks by encouraging safe driving habits. The number of water bead related visits to the emergency department has been increasing rapidly over the years. From 2021 to 2022, the number of emergency department visits increased from 55 cases to 127. Not only are these beads a choking hazards but they can also lead to serious complications if swallowed. If ingested, water beads can enlarge inside the body leading to intestinal blockage or they may be aspirated (enter the airway or lungs) while being swallowed. It is recommended that water beads be removed from spaces where children may be present, be kept in a tightly sealed container, and be stored away from the reach of children. #childsafety #childhoodinjury #injuryprevention #toys #teachers #parenting #parents #sensorylearning #poisonprevention #poisoncenter #poisoncontrol

Last year, an estimated 154,700 children 12 years & younger were treated in emergency rooms across the country due to toy-related injuries, per the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. So, to ensure gifted toys are safe for children this holiday season, South Texas Health System is offering the following safety tips when shopping for children's gifts: 🧸 Consider age-appropriate gifts 🪁 Inspect toys before buying 🪀 Avoid gifting toys that could be a potential hazard 🛹 Ensure additional safety measures for gifts that require them 🏓 Be mindful of small parts 🎁 Discard wrapping While the holiday season is intended to be a time to gather & celebrate the traditions of the season, adhering to these safety tips will help ensure children can enjoy the season & their gifts safely.

Every year, thousands of children are injured by unsafe toys, so it's important to be mindful of potential hazards when shopping for gifts. Here are some tips for choosing safe toys and gifts: 🟣Avoid toys with sharp edges or points. These can easily cause cuts and punctures. 🟣Choose toys that are made from durable materials. Toys that are easily broken can pose a choking hazard. 🟣Make sure toys are the right size for the child's age and abilities. Toys that are too small can be swallowed, while toys that are too large or complex can be difficult for children to use safely. 🟣Read the warning labels carefully. Warning labels will provide information about the toy's age appropriateness and any potential hazards. 🟣Inspect toys regularly for damage. Discard any toys that are broken or damaged. Do you know the violence safety gap for your community care site? Time is a critical safety factor at community care sites. This is especially true when there’s no security on-site. The violence safety gap is the amount of time between a violent event beginning until police arrive. Here are three factors to consider when estimating this gap for your community care site: ✅ Training: Does staff know how to communicate the nature of the emergency clearly to police? ✅ Timing of Police Notification: How quickly can staff notify police? Prepared staff and access to monitored body worn panic alarms can help here. ✅ Police Response Time: How does your site location, police staffing levels, and demand for services impact response times? Response times for priority 1 calls are increasing across the US. ✅ Security Measures: What security controls do you have in place to help shorten or bridge the violence safety gap?
