The Ocean Cleanup’s Post

Deploying technologies to combat plastic pollution is just one aspect of our operations. Our goal is to create a positive impact, not only in terms of intercepted trash but also by protecting and restoring oceanic, coastal, and riverine environments and benefitting local communities. In Kingston, Jamaica, we are tackling plastic pollution from multiple angles - deploying Interceptors to stop trash from entering the Caribbean Sea and, with our local partners, educating and involving local communities to restore the coastal and riverine environments. Last Saturday, local communities around Kingston came together to tackle plastic pollution in Kingston’s mangroves; here’s the whole story:

Educating local communities in Central and South America is key. Most of the population just throws the trash into the streets when walking or to the back of their houses in the river. It's awful. City Halls, in many cities, have all the collection infrastructure in place but people keep throwing it to the floor. We need a culture change. It's heart breaking...

We follow you and just find your work amazing!

This is bringing it home for me. I remember labour day beach clean up projects alongside co-workers. It's hard to imagine how much junk gets washed out to the ocean especially after a storm. Thanks for this initiative, more needs to be done on a regular basis but effort this will help wildlife to strive and the mangroves to breathe even for a little while.

Is there any way to issue a coin for cleaning the oceans and rivers? So even if you volunteer you get some equivalent in tokens that once it gets more and more popular in will increase the value and more ppl would love to buy it or get it so we create an actual value ?

Such a great cause, community, and conversation creator. The positive energy alone in this story should also be collected and shared. 😊
