As we look to overcome some of the globe’s most urgent and daunting challenges, the way in which we work together to achieve these goals should reflect that kind of world we seek to create and support. The theory and practice of nonviolence has been at the core of some of history’s most successful and enduring movements for positive change. Nonviolence is also rooted in cultural traditions, wisdom, and experiences from across the globe. This session looks specifically at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s 6 principles of nonviolence, which outlined the organizing philosophy for the US Civil Rights Movement. This session invites participants into conversation about how they see their own work in international development through the lens of these 6 principles and what it means for how they choose to design, manage, and lead projects that are intended to create more justice, equity, and sustainability. On the steps of Lincoln Memorial on August 28, 1963 in the US, Martin Luther King Jr. made one of the most epic speeches in history. A speech that fulfilled totally and completely its interpersonal metafunction. After this speech a nation raised fighting segregation and calls for its right of equality.
