I thoroughly enjoyed revisiting this classic article that highlights the distinct yet interconnected roles of managers and leaders.
In my experience guiding teams through turnarounds and transformations, I’ve seen firsthand how Kotter’s insights resonate: while managers bring order and consistency to complex environments, leaders drive the vision and momentum for change.
What stood out to me most was Kotter's focus on the need for 'leader-managers.' While these roles have traditionally been viewed as separate, the reality is that organizations thrive when they cultivate individuals who can seamlessly blend both skill sets. A true leader-manager has the ability to set a bold vision while also managing the intricate details that turn that vision into reality.
From my tenure as CEO at Incyte Diagnostics and CCO at Inform Diagnostics, I've seen that the most successful leader-managers know how to inspire teams to think big while ensuring they stay grounded in achievable steps. This dual approach is not about choosing between stability and change; it's about mastering both to navigate uncertainty effectively.
That said, Kotter wisely points out that not everyone will excel equally in both areas, and that’s okay. Some individuals have a natural inclination toward leadership, while others thrive in management roles.
The key is for organizations to value and nurture both types of talent, recognizing that strong leadership without solid management—or vice versa—can hinder progress.
As I discuss in my book, It’s Upside Down: The Surprising Business Wisdom Hidden in Jigsaw Puzzles, the pieces of a puzzle only come together when you have both a clear vision of the end goal and the methodical precision to assemble each piece.
Organizations need people who can think strategically like leaders and execute tactically like managers. Mastering both is the real challenge, and it's what ultimately sets successful businesses apart in today’s rapidly evolving landscape.
