As we approach Black Friday and the festive season, we can all expect to receive lots of emails trying to drive us online to make a purchase. Some we'll open. Some we'll ignore. Some will be lost in our junk folders. So, here's a timely reminder of the contribution printed marketing can make to sales and engagement, courtesy of research by Marketreach. After receiving a health & beauty catalogue in the post... * Nearly a quarter of recipients went online * Almost a fifth spoke to family or friends about it * 8% visited a physical store as a result We'll probably delete the emails we open within less than a minute. A catalogue, on the other hand, is likely to be enjoyed at leisure, kept for up to a month, and shared with others. Food for thought... I received 5 texts in about 6 hours from 5 different brands this past Memorial Day holiday. They were pretty good deals. They were all different. I didn't tap in to read any of them. When I coach brands on texting I want to drive home the facts: 1) You're not the only brand texting. 2) Don't be one of the brands that ONLY texts with holiday promotions like the 4th of July sales coming up. Think ahead: How can you engage before the holiday hits so you are not ignoring contacts, being immediately unsubscribed from or blocked? Here are three tactics you can use outside of holiday sales to keep up engagement: 1) Make your own secret sale NOT associated with the holiday (or around the holiday). 2) Check in on your VIPs - We appreciate you, how are you, what can we do for you? Include a survey. 3) New looks good on you - no matter your category: apparel, beauty, truck accessories - new stands out and getting new to your subscribers so they're the first to know is a great way to show appreciation. Vikki Hone brings up a great point about the unsung heros of the marketing world; the partners and spouses of marketers... My wife has had some amazing, intuitive insights on my projects. And some of them completely out of the blue. One time, I was doing a Google Ads audit for a large phone call center provider that was trying to get companies to sign up for their live Telemarketing service. But their internal team was having a hard time running Google Ads. There were clicks, but no conversions. So there I am sitting and working on the audit report, digging thru all the data, when my wife walks by my desk and sees me staring at the Search term report on the screen. Her: "Babe, what are you working on?" Me: "These are the search terms that people typed into Google to find this company's ads." Her: "Oh looks like people are trying to sign their exes up for telemarketing lists." Me: "What?!" Her: "You see the ones that say 'sign up for a call list', 'call list signup', 'get on call list'? People do that when they want to get back at their exes and spam their phones."
